The Detroit Tigers have spent much of the season struggling to find consistency, and their 27-39 record has only fueled expectations that they could become sellers ahead of the August 3 trade deadline. If that happens, few players in baseball would generate more attention than Tarik Skubal.
The two-time American League Cy Young Award winner is expected to return soon after undergoing a minor elbow procedure, and his status as a pending free agent makes his situation especially intriguing. Contenders across the league are expected to explore the possibility of acquiring the star left-hander, knowing that an ace can completely alter a postseason race.
Braves Linked to Another Big Deadline Target
One team that has frequently surfaced in speculation is the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta remains built to compete for championships, and adding a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber would immediately strengthen its rotation. Yet not everyone is convinced such a move would make sense.
One Braves insider recently raised questions about the cost involved in acquiring a player who could ultimately be a short-term addition.
“You also have to ask yourself: Are you willing to part ways with possibly two top prospects for what would amount to two months of the regular season and the playoffs?”.
That concern centers on the reality that Skubal may only be available for rent. While any team acquiring him would likely attempt to negotiate an extension, his representation by Scott Boras has led many to believe he could test the open market after the season. A full-scale bidding war would likely maximize his value and give him the opportunity to secure one of the largest contracts available to a starting pitcher.
Long-Term Contract Concerns Remain
Bowman also expressed concerns about the type of long-term commitment Skubal could command.
“Skubal will likely be seeking a five-plus year deal that includes an average annual salary of $40-50 million — or higher. Count me among those who wouldn’t make more than a three-year commitment to any pitcher 30 or older,” Bowman added.
Those concerns are not unique to Atlanta. Teams interested in trading for Skubal must also consider what comes next. If the expectation is that he reaches free agency, a contender could end up surrendering significant young talent for only a brief window of control.
The Cost Could Be Steep
From Atlanta’s perspective, the dilemma is clear. The organization possesses one of baseball’s strongest farm systems and has the prospect capital necessary to make a competitive offer. Any serious package would likely begin with highly regarded prospects such as Cam Caminiti or J.R. Ritchie and could also include other talented young players, such as Owen Murphy or John Gil.
There is no doubt that Skubal would give the Braves a major boost. A healthy version of the left-hander has proven capable of dominating opposing lineups and changing the outlook of an entire postseason series. At the same time, Atlanta must weigh the risks. Skubal is approaching free agency, he is returning from an injury, and the acquisition cost would be substantial.
For a franchise that expects to contend every year, sacrificing premium prospects for a player who may only remain for a few months is a difficult calculation. As appealing as Skubal’s talent may be, the Braves could ultimately determine that waiting until free agency presents a more practical path than paying a steep trade price now.
