Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan is under fire after a moment during Wednesday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates raised serious questions about sportsmanship — and possibly, spite.
The moment in question? Pirates rookie Cam Devanney had just notched his first-ever major league hit. It was a soft line drive that safely dropped into left field during the second inning. A routine moment on paper, but a career milestone for the 26-year-old infielder who had gone 0-for-4 in his debut just the night before.
As is tradition, Pirates teammates immediately started calling for the ball to be tossed into the dugout for Devanney to keep. That’s when things got weird — and Sheehan became the center of controversy.
Sheehan got the ball back after the play, turned to the umpire, and called for a new ball. Cameras showed what looked like a typical exchange — until fans noticed he appeared to swap the balls, pocket the one from Devanney’s hit, and toss the new ball toward the Pirates’ dugout.
The Moment Didn’t Go Unnoticed By Fans
Social media lit up with accusations that Sheehan had deliberately kept the rookie’s first hit ball — a classless move if intentional, and one that instantly overshadowed Devanney’s big night.
Why would a pitcher pull something like that? Some speculated it was out of frustration for giving up a hit. Others suggested it could’ve been a prank — or worse, an act of pettiness. But Sheehan has since denied any bad intent.
According to Dodgers reporter Kristen Watson, Sheehan claimed it was all a “misunderstanding” and said he planned to apologize to Devanney. He reportedly wasn’t aware the Pirates were requesting the ball and insisted he didn’t mean to keep it.
The questionable part is that Sheehan was the one who requested a new ball in the first place. If he didn’t know the ball was being asked for, why swap it? Why not just toss it over? It’s hard for fans to buy the “oops” defense when every step looked intentional.
Now, Sheehan is left doing damage control, and Devanney — who should’ve been celebrating — is stuck in the middle of an awkward situation that’s gone viral for all the wrong reasons.
