Apple TV+ reporter Tricia Whitaker found herself on the wrong side of a highlight reel after taking a foul ball off the wrist during the Baltimore Orioles’ 7-4 win over the Detroit Tigers at Camden Yards.

Whitaker was working the game from her field-level position when Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman sent a foul ball screaming into the area where she was stationed. The ball struck her in the wrist, immediately leaving a painful bruise that later required ice and medical attention from the Orioles staff.

The reporter documented the aftermath on Instagram, posting photos and videos showing trainers wrapping her arm and packing her wrist in ice. One clip showed her left hand submerged in a plastic bag full of ice while she joked about the incident.

“Good news: @adleyrutschman has elite exit velo,” she wrote. “Bad news: my wrist absorbed it.”

Despite the frightening moment, Whitaker managed to keep her sense of humor intact. The next morning, she reassured MLB followers that she was doing fine and continued leaning into baseball terminology while describing the injury.

“In case anyone was wondering, Adley Rutschman’s exit velo is still elite. My forearm is proof,” she posted on X.

“Found out what it feels like to be the injury update instead of reporting it, 10-day IL, forearm discomfort.”

She also thanked the Orioles’ medical staff for quickly helping her during the game.

“PS, I’m fine, thanks to the Orioles’ medical staff for the wrapping of my arm and ice all game!”

Foul Ball Danger Still Very Real

The incident quickly drew attention online, with many baseball fans pointing out just how dangerous foul balls can be, even for experienced reporters and stadium personnel who spend countless hours around the game. Foul balls entering media areas are not uncommon, but getting drilled directly by a sharply hit liner from a major league hitter is another matter entirely.

Rutschman, one of Baltimore’s biggest stars, is known for generating serious power at the plate, and Whitaker’s bruised forearm apparently became unexpected proof of it.

Even with protective netting expanded across Major League Baseball stadiums in recent years, foul balls remain a real hazard for fans, photographers, broadcasters, and team staff positioned close to the action.

Quick Recovery After Scary Incident

Fortunately, the injury does not appear to have slowed Whitaker down much. By Sunday, she was already back out covering sports-related events and attended the Indianapolis 500, signaling that the scary moment at Camden Yards did not result in anything more serious.

For one night, though, the reporter who normally delivers injury updates became the story herself.
