Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos continued reshaping Atlanta’s roster ahead of the Trade Deadline by acquiring left-handed reliever Brent Suter from the Angels on Monday morning in exchange for infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr.
The move is the latest in a busy stretch for the Braves, who have also added outfielder Lane Thomas and right-handed starter Tyler Mahle over the past three days. With the Trade Deadline set for 6 p.m. ET, Atlanta could still pursue another bullpen arm and possibly a frontline starter before the window closes.
Suter Adds Experience to Braves Bullpen
Suter has posted a 4.12 ERA across 63 1/3 innings in 41 appearances, including three starts, for the Angels this season. The 36-year-old left-hander has been particularly effective recently, recording a 2.51 ERA over nine appearances since the start of July.
One of Suter’s more unusual traits is his reverse splits. Right-handed hitters have managed just a .656 OPS against him this season, while left-handed batters have produced an .828 OPS.
Braves Continue Deadline Activity
The addition of Suter marks Atlanta’s third acquisition in as many days as Anthopoulos continues strengthening the club before the deadline. Thomas provides another option in the outfield, while Mahle gives the Braves additional depth in the starting rotation.
Atlanta has not ruled out making more moves before the deadline, with bullpen reinforcements and another starting pitcher remaining possible areas of focus.
Angels Take Chance on Alvarez
In return, the Angels receive Nacho Alvarez Jr., a former highly regarded Braves prospect whose development has been slowed by injuries over the past few seasons.
Alvarez appeared in parts of the 2024 and 2025 seasons with Atlanta, hitting .216 with two home runs and a .575 OPS over 240 plate appearances. He also played 37 games with Triple-A Gwinnett this season, where he posted a .663 OPS as he looked to regain his footing.
