The Houston Astros, always a team to watch, made an interesting depth move on Wednesday, adding a Gold Glove-winning infielder to their mix. But the real eye-opener? Longtime second baseman and franchise cornerstone José Altuve is taking reps in the outfield. Yeah, you read that right.
Astros Add Gold Glove Talent for Depth

The Astros have signed former Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers to a minor-league deal, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC2.
Rodgers isn’t exactly the offensive force some once expected—he put up a 94 OPS+ last season—but the guy can flash the leather. In 2022, he racked up over 20 Defensive Runs Saved, earning himself a Gold Glove at second base.
So, what’s the play here? Well, Houston’s infield situation is in flux. The Astros have restructured their lineup with Alex Bregman out the door in free agency.
Christian Walker is now handling first base, and Isaac Paredes (acquired in the Kyle Tucker trade) is slotted in at third.
But the real twist? Altuve could be moving around the diamond, potentially seeing time in left field.
Altuve Shifting Positions: Experiment or Long-Term Plan?
Manager Joe Espada played it coy when asked about the plan, saying, “I’m not going to share the plan with you yet because this is going to be an everyday thing.”
We know that Altuve has already taken fly balls in left this spring, and while second base is still in the mix for him, the Astros are clearly exploring some defensive versatility.
The idea of shifting Altuve isn’t entirely out of left field (pun intended). He’s 33 now, and while still productive, the Astros may be looking for ways to keep his bat in the lineup while easing his defensive workload.
Mauricio Dubón figures to take over second base when Altuve is in the outfield, but Rodgers’ presence gives Houston an extra option if he performs well in camp.
What This Means for the Astros
If Altuve does get significant time in the outfield, it will be a major shift in Houston’s defensive alignment.
Dubón likely becomes the primary second baseman, with Rodgers providing insurance if he makes the roster. A Gold Glove-caliber defender coming off the bench? Not a bad option.
Bottom line? The Astros are keeping things flexible with a new look to their infield and Altuve’s potential position shift.
Houston is making sure they have all their bases covered. Stay tuned because this lineup could still have a few surprises before Opening Day.
