The Atlanta Braves are gearing up for the 2025 season with one glaring uncertainty on their roster being shortstop.

While most of the lineup looks locked in, the question remains whether Orlando Arcia is the right man for the job.

Arcia’s status as the Braves’ starting shortstop has felt shaky for a while now. Yes, he shocked everyone by making the 2023 NL All-Star team, but his offensive production has since cratered.

In 2024, he was one of the worst hitters in all of baseball, and with another rough season, his grip on the starting role is looking increasingly fragile.

However, Arcia still holds onto his spot despite his struggles—at least for now. The Braves didn’t make any splashy signings or trades to replace him this offseason, and their internal options are thin. But that doesn’t mean they won’t make a move before Opening Day.

If Atlanta has shown anything in recent years, it’s that they’re not afraid to make bold, last-minute acquisitions when the right opportunity presents itself.

Could Xander Bogaerts Be the Answer?

Could Xander Bogaerts Be the Answer?

One intriguing possibility is Xander Bogaerts. On Monday, Zachary D. Rymer speculated that the Braves could look into acquiring the four-time All-Star from the San Diego Padres.

It’s a long shot, but not entirely out of the question. The Padres, desperate to shed payroll, could be looking to offload Bogaerts’ massive contract—an 11-year, $280 million deal that still has nine seasons remaining.

As Rymer put it, “It’s a real ‘Good luck with that’ idea.” And he’s not wrong. Bogaerts is coming off a disappointing 1.2-rWAR season, and that contract is a financial nightmare.

However, it might be worth considering if the Braves could negotiate a trade that included a prospect or financial flexibility.

Would Bogaerts Be a Fit in Atlanta?

Would Bogaerts Be a Fit in Atlanta?

Despite his struggles in San Diego, Bogaerts is still a proven hitter. His career slash line is .289/.352/.451, and he had a 106 OPS+ in his injury-shortened time with the Padres.

He’s been an elite offensive shortstop for most of his career, and at just 32 years old, there’s a good chance he has more productive seasons ahead.

If he were to land in Atlanta, he wouldn’t be the first veteran to find a second wind with the Braves. The organization has a history of revitalizing players’ careers, and in the right environment, Bogaerts could bounce back in a big way.

The question is whether the Braves see him as the right gamble—and whether they can strike a deal that makes sense for both sides.

Arcia remains the starter for now, but as Opening Day approaches, don’t be surprised if the Braves move to upgrade at shortstop. Whether it’s Bogaerts or another surprise acquisition, this is a position battle worth watching.
