Austin Riley endured a 2026 regular season that fell well short of the Braves’ expectations, but one swing can change the conversation quickly in October.

The Atlanta Braves third baseman delivered exactly that kind of moment in Game 1 of the NL wild-card series against the Philadelphia Phillies, blasting a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead Atlanta to a 5-3 win over its NL East rival.

Riley came to the plate with the Braves trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth and Phillies closer Jhoan Duran on the mound. It was an imposing matchup. Duran brought his triple-digit velocity into a situation where Philadelphia needed only a few more outs to secure the opening game of the best-of-three series.

Earlier in the night, Riley had already missed an opportunity to produce with a runner aboard in the sixth inning. When another chance arrived two innings later, he didn’t miss.

Duran fired a 100 mph pitch over the middle of the plate, and Riley turned on it. The ball traveled 385 feet for a three-run homer, instantly flipping Atlanta’s one-run deficit into a 5-3 lead.

For Riley, the timing could hardly have been more dramatic. The home run was only his fifth since Aug. 15 following a difficult regular season at the plate. Whatever frustration accompanied those struggles suddenly mattered considerably less after one of Atlanta’s biggest swings of the year.

Game 1 Has Carried Enormous Weight in the Wild-Card Round

Riley’s home run also put the Braves in a favorable historical position in the short wild-card format.

Since MLB introduced the best-of-three wild-card series in 2022, the team winning Game 1 has gone on to win 15 of the first 16 series. Eleven of those 16 series ended in two-game sweeps, illustrating just how quickly the opening game can determine the direction of a three-game matchup.

The only exception came last season, when the New York Yankees lost Game 1 against the Boston Red Sox before recovering to win the series.

Atlanta now has two opportunities to secure the one victory it needs to advance. Doing so would send the Braves to the NLDS for the first time since the 2023 postseason.

One Swing Changes Riley’s October Story

For most of the regular season, Riley didn’t provide the production Atlanta expected from him. But postseason baseball can compress months of frustration into a single at-bat.

On Tuesday, Riley got the pitch he needed at precisely the moment Atlanta needed him to deliver. One 100 mph fastball and 385 feet later, the Braves had gone from trailing their division rival to standing one victory away from the NLDS.
