Sunday’s series finale between the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Guardians comes with an unexpected twist, and it has nothing to do with the scoreline. With the matchup tied 1-1 heading into the final game at Truist Park, Atlanta made a roster decision that immediately shifted attention from the field to the front office.
A Veteran Braves Exit That Raises Eyebrows

Veteran left-hander Martín Pérez has been designated for assignment.
The move arrived quietly but carried weight. Pérez, now in his 15th Major League season, had only just begun his tenure in Atlanta. Through three appearances, he posted a 3.14 ERA and held a 0-1 record. Those numbers, while limited in sample size, didn’t immediately signal urgency. Yet the Braves opted to move on.
In his place, Atlanta recalled Dylan Dodd to provide bullpen depth. The adjustment, however, does not resolve the more pressing issue: the starting rotation.
Rotation Uncertainty Opens the Door
According to reports, manager Brian Snitker and the coaching staff are still evaluating their next step. With an off day on Thursday, the team has the flexibility to delay naming a permanent replacement. That window leaves prospects like Ritchie and Didier Fuentes as possible options for the next turn through the rotation.
The lack of a clear successor adds to the uncertainty. Rather than plugging in a defined role, Atlanta appears willing to wait, assess, and potentially experiment before committing to a longer-term solution.
Fans Question the Decision
The reaction was immediate and pointed. Fans questioned not only the timing but the choice itself. Several responses focused on why Pérez was removed while José Suárez remains on the roster, suggesting confusion over how roles are being prioritized. Others went further, calling it an outright wrong decision.
Pérez’s career résumé adds another layer to the move. Across 328 games, he has compiled a 91-94 record with a 4.40 ERA. His journey has included multiple stops, as well as notable highs, such as an All-Star selection in 2022 and a World Series title with the Texas Rangers in 2023.
Atlanta, sitting at 9-6 and leading the National League East, is not reacting from a position of weakness in the standings. The Braves now turn their attention to a home series against the Miami Marlins beginning Monday, with the next rotation decision still unresolved.
