The Atlanta Braves and their fans are mourning the loss of franchise legend Rico Carty, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 85. Known as one of the most dynamic players in team history, Carty left an indelible mark on the Braves and Major League Baseball during a career that spanned 15 years and included stops with five other teams. However, his heart and legacy always seemed tied to Atlanta.
The Braves honored Carty on social media, reflecting on his impact both on and off the field. “Few players in franchise history connected with Braves fans like Rico Carty,” the team posted. They recalled his remarkable career highlights, including being the first player to record a hit for the organization in Atlanta after the team’s move from Milwaukee in 1966. His 1970 season remains iconic. Carty hit an astounding .366, setting a modern-era franchise record for batting average and earning him a National League All-Star nod.
Carty’s charm extended beyond the diamond. Known for his generosity, he became an instant fan favorite and earned the affection of the Atlanta crowd. The fans later nicknamed the left-field seats “Carty’s Corner.” His contributions to the franchise were immortalized when he was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame earlier in 2023.
Despite his achievements, Carty’s career was not without its challenges. After two standout seasons in Atlanta, he missed the entire 1968 season due to tuberculosis. Undeterred, he returned in 1969 and helped propel the team to the National League Championship Series. His 1970 batting title capped one of the most remarkable comebacks in MLB history.
Unfortunately, a knee injury during the 1971 offseason sidelined him again, costing him the entire season and curtailing his time with Atlanta. Although Carty went on to play for Chicago, Texas, Oakland, Cleveland, and Toronto, his most memorable moments remained rooted in Atlanta.
