Braden Montgomery could not have scripted a more dramatic introduction to Major League Baseball. The Chicago White Sox rookie delivered a debut that Rate Field will remember for a long time, launching a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Chicago to a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. In a game that featured multiple momentum swings, a comeback from a four-run deficit, and a concerning injury to one of baseball’s biggest stars, Montgomery ultimately provided the defining moment.
The Braves appeared to be in control early. Matt Olson powered Atlanta’s offense with two home runs in the first three innings, driving in three runs as the visitors built a 4-0 advantage. Facing the team with the best record in baseball at 45-22, the White Sox looked to be headed for a difficult night.
White Sox Battle Back Against the Braves

Chicago began chipping away at the lead in the third inning when Miguel Vargas launched a two-run homer to get the White Sox on the board. The rally continued in the fourth when Montgomery collected his first major league RBI with a run-scoring single, trimming Atlanta’s lead to 4-3.
The White Sox kept the pressure on throughout the middle innings. Jacob Gonzalez delivered a key RBI single in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, completing Chicago’s comeback after trailing by four runs.
The victory improved Chicago to 35-31 and moved the second-place White Sox within a half-game of Cleveland in the American League Central standings.
Acuña Injury Casts Shadow
While the game ultimately became Montgomery’s night, one of the biggest storylines involved Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr.
Acuña exited in the fourth inning after suffering an injury while running to first base on a ground ball. The outfielder left the game immediately, creating concern for Atlanta as the club continues its strong season.
The Braves entered the contest with baseball’s best record and had not lost a series opener since falling to the Miami Marlins on May 18. Tuesday’s defeat also marked just the second walk-off loss Atlanta has suffered all season. Coincidentally, the other walk-off defeat also came by a 6-5 score in 10 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 5.
Rookie Delivers in the Clutch
Extra innings brought even more drama. Mauricio Dubón appeared to put Atlanta in position for victory when he drove in a run with a single in the top of the 10th, giving the Braves a 5-4 edge.
Chicago still had one final opportunity.
With automatic runner Andrew Benintendi standing at third base and two outs in the bottom half, Montgomery stepped to the plate against Braves closer Raisel Iglesias. After taking an 0-1 count, the rookie connected on a changeup and drove the ball 343 feet over the left-field wall.
Benintendi crossed the plate ahead of Montgomery as the crowd erupted. The walk-off home run secured a 6-5 victory and capped one of the most memorable major league debuts imaginable.
For one night, against the best team in baseball, the spotlight belonged entirely to Braden Montgomery. His first game in the majors ended with a walk-off blast, a celebration at home plate, and a story that will follow him long after his debut night.
