When the Atlanta Braves welcome the Los Angeles Angels to Truist Park on Tuesday, it was supposed to be more than just a cross-league matchup—it was set to be a reunion.

Several familiar faces from the Braves’ past are now wearing Angels uniforms. Unfortunately, one of the most anticipated returns will have to wait. Ron Washington, the beloved former Braves third base coach and current Angels manager, has stepped away from his duties to address an undisclosed health issue.

Snitker and Washington: More Than Just Colleagues

Braves manager Brian Snitker was candid and heartfelt when asked about Washington following Sunday’s game. The two worked side by side from 2016 to 2023. That stretch that included a World Series title and countless dugout decisions shared between two of baseball’s most respected minds.

“I’ve told him, you know what? Whatever he does, I’m going to be praying for him and hoping for the best because he’s a really good friend,” Snitker said. “And I know how this affects him, and we’re all concerned. All we want is for him to take the right steps and get back healthy and doing what he loves.”

Snitker added that he and Washington have spoken “a number” of times—both live and over text. The connection remains strong, and the concern from the Braves clubhouse is real.

Ron Washington left Atlanta after the 2023 season to take the managerial job with the Angels—his second stint leading a big-league team after managing the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014. In Texas, he led the Rangers to consecutive AL pennants in 2010 and 2011.

In Atlanta, he helped shape an infield that became one of the best defensive units in baseball, mentoring stars like Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies while guiding the team to a 2021 World Series crown.

His coaching presence, attention to detail, and energy made him a favorite not only among players but also with Braves fans, who recognized the value he brought.

A Private Battle in a Public Game

The announcement that Washington would step away came prior to the Angels’ June 20 series against the Astros, with the team noting only that it would be an “indefinite” leave. Reports emerged Friday suggesting he could sit out the remainder of the season. Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery has taken over as interim manager in his absence.

No specifics about Washington’s condition have been made public—and if that changes, it likely won’t be until after he has made significant progress on the road to recovery. For now, it’s about privacy, rest, and support from around the baseball world.

One of the Game’s Most Respected Voices

Ron Washington’s career spans generations of baseball players, from infield prospects grinding in spring training to veteran clubhouses chasing championships. His return to Atlanta would have been a celebration—but even from a distance, the appreciation remains just as strong.

For now, Braves fans—and baseball fans in general—will watch, wait, and hope for good news. Washington may not be in the dugout Tuesday night, but his presence will still be felt.
