Braves’ Rising Star: No. 2 Prospect Deemed Most MLB Ready

The Atlanta Braves have some exciting young pitching talent waiting in the wings, and one name stands out as ready to make a splash: AJ Smith-Shawver.

In Bleacher Report’s recent list of the most MLB-ready prospects for each team, Joel Reuter pegged Smith-Shawver as the Braves’ top contender, and for good reason.

At just 22, Smith-Shawver already boasts an impressive arsenal. Reuter highlighted his upper-90s fastball, a plus slider, and a quality curveball and changeup, making him a versatile weapon on the mound.

Limited But Solid Stats Last Season For the Braves

Limited But Solid Stats Last Season For the Braves

He had limited time in the MLB last season, but showed promise. He posted a 3.64 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 29.2 innings. Regardless of the sample size, it was enough to establish him as a standout among the Braves’ pitching prospects.

Of course, Smith-Shawver’s trajectory hasn’t been entirely smooth. He made a strong impression early on, but a Grade 2 oblique strain sidelined him after just one MLB start.

That injury cost him a couple of crucial months and landed him back in Triple-A, where he started 20 games and logged a 4.86 ERA with a solid 1.25 WHIP. However, his .215 opponent’s average and 104 strikeouts in 87 innings showcased his raw potential.

The Braves clearly have confidence in him. They picked him to start the first game of the Wild Card series last October. That pick alone underscores how highly the organization regards his readiness.

Smith-Shawver’s Competition in 2025

Heading into 2025, Smith-Shawver will likely compete with arms like Grant Holmes, Ian Anderson, Bryce Elder, and fellow prospect Hurston Waldrep for a rotation spot.

Even if he doesn’t make the cut in Spring Training, he’s primed to contribute during the regular season. Smith-Shawver offers the Braves a high-upside, in-house solution, whether as a spot starter or a bullpen option.

His path to the majors hasn’t been without its speed bumps. But the experience and confidence the Braves have in him point to a bright future. Keep an eye on this one, his impact could come sooner rather than later.
