The Atlanta Braves entered Spring Training with Orlando Arcia penciled in as their starting shortstop. After watching the struggles continue this spring, it is beginning to feel like that could change.
Let’s talk about the situation brewing at shortstop—because it is officially a situation.
Arcia Struggles to Find His Swing

Arcia has been struggling at the plate in Grapefruit League action, going 1-for-15 with three walks. Sure, it’s just Spring Training, but coming off a 2023 season where his offensive production left a lot to be desired, this start isn’t exactly reassuring.
The Braves need consistency at short, and right now, Arcia is making that conversation a little too easy.
Eli White Taking Infield Reps For The Braves
White, a name most fans associate with the outfield, has been getting reps at shortstop—his second time playing the position this spring came in Tuesday’s loss to the Tigers.
Now, this wasn’t just some random experiment. White has been working primarily at second base in camp. Shifting him over to short is interesting, considering he has never played the position at the Major League level.
White Is Making His Case
White has significant experience at shortstop in his minor-league history. He’s logged 2,374 innings there, making it his most played position in the minors.
The Braves clearly see something they like, and given the way he’s been swinging the bat this spring, it’s easy to understand why they’re taking a closer look.
White has been raking in the Grapefruit League, slashing .421 (8-for-19) with a 1.055 OPS. He’s also showing discipline, striking out only twice in 21 plate appearances.
Is White making a case for more playing time? Arcia’s struggles are helping to make the case.
Nick Allen Could Enter the Braves Mix As Well
Nick Allen is another name quietly entering the conversation. He hasn’t seen game action since early March, but Allen has been great when he’s played, hitting .385 with a .929 OPS in limited at-bats.
So, where does this leave Arcia? For now, he’s still the guy at short, but the door is wide open. If he doesn’t start to turn things around, the Braves might have to make a tough call.
White has the hot bat, minor-league experience at the position, and momentum on his side. Arcia? He’s got the job—for now.
