The Atlanta Braves appear ready to make another adjustment to a pitching staff that has been stretched thin over the last several days. According to reports, right-hander Victor Mederos is expected to be added to the active roster, with the move potentially happening as soon as Tuesday. No corresponding roster move has been reported yet, but after Monday night’s disastrous 12-0 loss to the Miami Marlins, the timing makes plenty of sense.

Atlanta’s pitching situation has become increasingly difficult to manage. Rookie JR Ritchie lasted only four innings against Miami, surrendering six runs before the bullpen was forced to absorb the rest of the damage. Aaron Bummer’s rough season continued in brutal fashion when he gave up a grand slam during another difficult outing that helped the Marlins pile on. By the late innings, the Braves were already in survival mode, turning to position player Jorge Mateo to get through an inning and spare what little remained of the bullpen.

The workload issue has been building for days. Over the weekend, Atlanta leaned heavily on Bryce Elder, pushing him through eight innings largely because there simply were not enough reliable bullpen options available. Didier Fuentes also pitched Monday night, which could leave him unavailable in the short term. The club clearly needs fresh arms, and Mederos now appears positioned to fill that role.

The Braves acquired Mederos from Los Angeles in early April, and his performance at Triple-A Gwinnett has quickly put him on the radar for a promotion. Since joining the organization, the right-hander has posted a strong 2.53 ERA with 19 strikeouts and a 1.17 WHIP across 21 1/3 innings. Those numbers stand out even more considering the instability Atlanta has dealt with on the mound recently.

Victor Mederos Could Provide Immediate Help

For a team trying to stay competitive while navigating injuries and inconsistent pitching, adding a fresh arm who has been effective in Triple-A could provide immediate help, even if initially in a relief role. The Braves do not necessarily need Mederos to dominate right away. They simply need innings, stability, and someone capable of preventing games from spiraling the way Monday’s did against Miami.

Atlanta has been searching for consistency from the back end of the pitching staff for weeks. If Mederos can carry over his Triple-A success, he could quickly earn a larger role while the organization continues sorting through injuries and bullpen fatigue.

Ronald Acuña Jr. Could Return Tuesday

There is also another development Braves fans are watching closely. Ronald Acuña Jr. was officially activated Monday before the loss, though he never entered the game. Given the lopsided score, there was little reason to use him, but had the game remained close, he likely would have been available as a pinch hitter.

There is now a strong possibility Acuña returns to the starting lineup Tuesday, which would provide a major spark to an offense still trying to regain consistency. Atlanta suddenly has plenty of attention surrounding Tuesday’s roster decisions. One move could stabilize the bullpen. The other could put one of baseball’s biggest stars back into the lineup.
