Brandon Woodruff has taken the ball in some of the biggest games in Milwaukee Brewers history, but Wednesday against the Pirates? This one had extra stakes.
Not just his perfect season record. Not just a shot at extending the Brewers’ winning streak. No — this was for free burgers for the entire city of Milwaukee.
“I was nervous,” Woodruff admitted. “There was a little bit more at stake today. I wanted to win those burgers bad. Who doesn’t want a free burger?”
The Brewers Winning Streak
The Brewers thumped the Pirates 12–5, making it 12 wins in a row — the magic number for George Webb’s legendary local promotion. For decades, the Milwaukee burger chain has promised free hamburgers if the city’s baseball team won a certain number of consecutive games.
The mark has shifted over the years — from 17 to 13 to the current 12 — but only two teams have ever delivered: the 1987 Brewers (170,000 burgers given away) and the 2018 Brewers, who closed the season with eight straight regular-season wins plus four in the playoffs.
Milwaukee nearly pulled it off earlier this year with an 11-game streak, but now they’ve done it — and the buns, patties, and condiments are ready. George Webb will announce the burger giveaway details on Thursday.
It’s not often a win gets you a place in the standings and a place in line for a free lunch.
