As the Chicago Cubs ramp up for a tense NL Central stretch run, they’re making a bold bullpen move that signals win-now urgency — even if it means parting with a seasoned veteran.

According to The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney, the Cubs have designated Ryan Pressly for assignment. The 36-year-old reliever, who carried playoff pedigree and a World Series résumé from his time with the Astros, never quite found his groove in Chicago. He posted a 4.35 ERA with 28 strikeouts across 41 1/3 innings this season.

Now, his roster spot will reportedly go to Taylor Rogers, a fellow former All-Star who was just dealt for the second time in as many days.

Pressly, a 13-year MLB vet, joined the Cubs with expectations of solidifying late innings. But inconsistency has hurt him throughout the season. Once the Astros’ go-to closer during their title runs, Pressly failed to recreate that dominance at Wrigley.

Meanwhile, Rogers brings a left-handed presence and a track record of success after earning All-Star honors with the Minnesota Twins in 2021. His arrival comes at a crucial time: the Cubs are locked in a one-game race with the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the NL Central.

Cubs Signal They’re All In

The Cubs prove they aren’t waiting around by DFA’ing a veteran like Pressly mid-season, especially one with October experience. That shows the front office is willing to take risks to stay competitive. And with the division up for grabs, every inning matters.

Taylor Rogers now steps into a bullpen that needs impact immediately. If he delivers, this could be the edge Chicago needs to punch their postseason ticket — and maybe do some damage once they get there.
