The Chicago Cubs were one of the teams reportedly strongly in the hunt for Alex Bregman. However, the star third baseman is heading to Boston on a three-year, $120 million deal, leaving Chicago in need of a new plan at the hot corner. So, where do they go from here?
Matt Shaw, MLB Pipeline’s No. 19 prospect, is the most intriguing in-house option. The 22-year-old infielder has been climbing the ranks quickly, and there’s a lot to like about his bat.
But relying on a rookie to handle an everyday role at third base for a team looking to contend? That’s a big gamble. Which brings us to Justin Turner.
Justin Turner is a Strong Option For the Cubs
The two-time All-Star, longtime Dodgers staple, and postseason-tested veteran. According to The Athletic, the Cubs are seriously considering bringing in Justin Turner to add experience and depth to their lineup.
And it seems like the feeling might be mutual. Turner and his wife reportedly like the idea of spending the summer in Chicago.
Now, let’s talk about what Turner brings to the table. At 40 years old, he’s no longer the everyday third baseman he once was, but he’s still a productive hitter with versatility.
Last season, split between Toronto and Seattle, he posted a .259/.364/.383 slash line with 114 OPS+—not eye-popping numbers, but still well above league average.
While his defense at third base has declined, he could get reps at first base or serve as a designated hitter. And when it comes to October? Turner shines.
He knows how to deliver in big moments, with a .821 career OPS in the regular season and an even stronger .830 OPS over 368 postseason plate appearances.
Will the Cubs pull the trigger on Turner, or will they look elsewhere for veteran help? One thing’s for sure—after missing out on Bregman, they still have some work to do to solidify their infield.
