Cavan Biggio’s time with the Atlanta Braves was so brief that even die-hard fans might have missed it. If you blinked, you may have overlooked his entire tenure, which spanned only four games.
Yes, four games – that’s not even a week in the big leagues. And in those four appearances, he had just five plate appearances, collecting one hit in the process. It’s safe to say his stint was not exactly what Braves fans would call “memorable.”
Biggio’s arrival in Atlanta was part of a patchwork solution for a team struggling with injuries. After being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays in June, Biggio bounced from the Dodgers to the Giants and finally to the Braves. Atlanta acquired him on September 7 as they looked for backup options. Yet, his impact was minimal, with barely enough time for him to unpack his bags.
It’s been a challenging season for Biggio, to say the least. Once viewed as part of the Toronto Blue Jays’ next generation of baseball royalty – the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, he joined a young core that included Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. But while his peers blossomed, Biggio’s career has been more of a rollercoaster ride.
His numbers have been underwhelming since his promising rookie year, where he hit 16 home runs and finished fifth in AL Rookie of the Year voting. He’s managed a career slash line of .225/.341/.379 with 52 home runs and 186 RBIs.
Spotrac projects he could still command a $6 million annual salary in free agency – not a blockbuster figure, but still likely too steep for a Braves team focused on securing their top stars for the long term. So, it seems Atlanta will move forward without Biggio, and he’ll be back on the open market looking for a new home come 2025.
