Max Fried Potentially Heading To LA Dodgers Next Season?

Date:

The Atlanta Braves have been masterful in locking up many of their young stars to long-term contracts in recent years, ensuring the team remains competitive well into the future. However, one glaring omission from that list is left-handed pitcher Max Fried.

With his contract set to expire after the 2024 season, Fried is on the brink of becoming an unrestricted free agent, and many in the baseball world are already speculating about his future. One team, particularly the Los Angeles Dodgers, could deal a serious blow to Braves fans if they manage to land the ace.

According to Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston, Fried signing with the Dodgers is a real possibility. Beaston highlighted a few key reasons why this move could make sense. “Heyman linked Fried to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where his former teammate, Jack Flaherty, has thrived for one of the best teams in the game,” Beaston explained.

The Dodgers have long been one of baseball’s powerhouses, consistently in the hunt for championships, and their one notable weakness this past season? Starting pitching. With his proven track record, Max Fried could be just what they need to solidify their rotation.

It’s a scary thought for Braves fans, especially considering the Dodgers’ financial might. Beaston pointed out that money likely wouldn’t be an issue for L.A., noting their “seemingly endless pile of cash” to pursue free agents.

The Dodgers have a history of throwing big dollars at key free agents, most notably former Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. Watching another Braves fan favorite represent Dodger Blue would sting, particularly given the playoff history between the two clubs.

Fried’s 2024 season has been solid, despite some injury issues. He’s posted a 10-10 record with a respectable 3.42 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 165.2 innings. Though injuries marred his second half, Max Fried still managed to make his second All-Star team in three years, further cementing his status as one of the league’s top left-handed starters. His career numbers—72-36 with a 3.10 ERA—speak for themselves, making him a highly sought-after asset in free agency.

While Beaston’s prediction focused on the Dodgers, other teams are also reportedly in the mix for Fried. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand mentioned the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers as potential suitors. If a bidding war ensues, it could be a blessing or a curse for the Braves, depending on whether they can offer Fried a competitive deal.

The prospect of Fried signing with the Mets or Phillies may seem worse to Braves fans, given the bitter N.L. East rivalries, but the idea of him heading to L.A. also stirs plenty of emotions.

All eyes will be on Fried’s upcoming start against the Kansas City Royals. While it’s hard to predict what the offseason holds, there’s a real possibility this could be his final appearance in a Braves uniform, ending an era and perhaps marking the beginning of a new chapter—one that Braves fans hope won’t involve the Dodgers.
