The Washington Nationals moved quickly after a disturbing political stunt unfolded during Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, identifying and banning one fan connected to a banner promoting mass deportation and a white nationalist website during the team’s 7-3 loss at Nationals Park.

The banner appeared in the upper deck along the first-base line during the club’s “Salute to Service” ceremony, a pre-fourth inning tribute honoring military personnel and veterans. According to team officials, an usher attempted to confiscate the sign shortly after it was unfurled. The group holding it reportedly kept it away from stadium staff before fleeing the area and exiting the ballpark.

The banner itself called for the deportation of “100+ million” people while directing attention to a white nationalist website, prompting immediate backlash online and from the organization.

In a public statement issued after the game, the Nationals condemned the display in direct terms.

“The Washington Nationals vehemently condemn discriminatory and hateful rhetoric, and we strive to make our home field a safe space for our fans,” the team said.

Officials also confirmed they are working with the Metropolitan Police Department as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident. The organization did not release the identity of the banned individual.

Fan Appears to Claim Responsibility

The controversy intensified after conservative activist and January 6 defendant Jake Lang appeared to claim responsibility on social media. Posting video footage of the banner inside the stadium, Lang celebrated the incident and described it as a “massive flag drop.”

“The Crusaders have just completed our first MASSIVE FLAG DROP at the Washington Nationals MLB game!!!!!” Lang wrote online.

“THE CROWD WENT ABSOLUTELY NUTS!!!! (They might have killed us if we didn’t get escorted out…).”

His posts quickly spread across social media platforms as criticism mounted over the banner’s message and the timing of the display during a military appreciation ceremony.

Questions Raised About Stadium Security

The stunt also raised questions about how the group managed to bring the banner into Nationals Park despite existing security rules. The stadium requires bags to be clear and within strict size limits, though nylon banners would not typically trigger magnetometers used at entrances.

Nationals Park policies specifically prohibit the venue from being used as a platform for political demonstrations or public speech campaigns. Stadium guidelines state the ballpark “is not a forum or place for use by the public at large for assembly and speech, for use by certain speakers or for the discussion of certain subjects.”

The timing of the banner display during a military appreciation segment only added to the backlash surrounding the incident, with critics arguing the group intentionally chose a moment designed to maximize attention and disruption.
