On any given night at a Major League Baseball game, thousands of fans settle into their seats carrying the same unlikely dream. It doesn’t matter whether they are sitting along the baselines or tucked away in the upper deck. The hope remains the same: maybe a baseball will find its way into their hands.
For most fans, that moment never comes. Years of attending games can pass without a single foul ball, home run, or batting practice souvenir landing within reach. Yet the possibility keeps people watching every swing a little more closely. What almost nobody imagines is having that dream come true twice in the span of a few innings.
That was the reality for Orioles fan Avery Jacobsen during Baltimore’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night.
Twice the Luck

Jacobsen’s memorable evening began in the fourth inning when Orioles prospect Coby Mayo launched a home run into the seats. Among the crowd scrambling for the ball, Jacobsen emerged with the prize. For many fans, that alone would have been the highlight of a lifetime.
But the baseball gods apparently were not finished.
Just one inning later, Blaze Alexander lined a ground-rule double that bounced into the stands. Once again, the ball found its way to Jacobsen. Against staggering odds, he had managed to collect two game balls in consecutive innings.
The unusual feat quickly drew attention, with Major League Baseball sharing video of the moment across social media. The clip spread rapidly as fans reacted to the remarkable stroke of luck.
A Gesture That Won Over Fans
One reporter tracked down Jacobsen and uncovered another detail that made the story even better. Rather than keeping both souvenirs for himself, the recent college graduate handed the second ball to a younger fan nearby.
The gesture earned praise from fellow spectators and baseball fans online.
“You got to give balls to kids,” Jacobsen explained. “You want them coming back to the ballpark.”
It was a simple comment, but one that captured a long-standing tradition around the sport. A few moments can spark a young fan’s love of baseball quite like walking away with a game ball.
Viral Moment Overshadows Orioles Loss
For Jacobsen, the night became unforgettable for reasons beyond the rare double catch. His good fortune turned him into a viral sensation, ensuring that plenty of baseball fans who were nowhere near Camden Yards will remember the story as well.
Unfortunately for Baltimore, the excitement in the stands did not translate into a victory on the field. Mayo’s home run, which ended up in Jacobsen’s glove, accounted for the Orioles’ only run of the night as Toronto escaped with a 2-1 win.
The loss dropped Baltimore to 26-31 on the season, leaving the Orioles 10 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Still, while the Orioles left disappointed, one fan walked away with a night that few baseball fans will ever experience.
