Well, here we go again. Another offseason, another wide receiver in the headlines—but this time, it’s Stefon Diggs, and the buzz is turning into a full-blown symphony up in New England.

Let’s start with the video. You probably saw it—or at least heard about it. Diggs, surrounded by music, sun, and what looked like a bachelorette party gone sideways, appearing to hand out pink powder to three women aboard a yacht. Patriots fans and media alike pounced, wondering what kind of message the team’s newest (and priciest) star was sending.

But then Monday rolled around, and just like that, Diggs walked into voluntary OTAs like he never missed a beat. And let’s be clear: that changed the narrative.

Head coach Mike Vrabel made it known that the team was aware of the video but kept things diplomatic, simply stating that players needed to make “great decisions on and off the field.” Translation: This isn’t going away entirely, but it’s also not blowing up into something that derails training camp.

Diggs is still working his way back from an ACL tear suffered last October, so his presence at OTAs is as much about optics as it is about football. Showing up this early—especially in a voluntary setting—sends a message: he’s committed. And for a guy coming off knee surgery and a major payday (three years, $63.5 million, to be exact), that visibility matters. It quiets speculation. It soothes a cautious fanbase.

Josh McDaniels, ever the cool hand, didn’t sound worried at all. “I know he’s staying up on the information and the material,” he said, projecting confidence in Diggs’ ability to mentally absorb the new playbook even if he’s not at 100% physically. McDaniels emphasized that the team has plenty of time before September, and right now, the key is reps, recovery, and readiness.

Let’s not gloss over the football side of this. Stefon Diggs could be the guy for Drake Maye. The second-year quarterback needs a seasoned, reliable, and dynamic receiver to lean on, and few fit that bill better than a four-time Pro Bowler who averaged nearly six catches a game in a shortened 2024 season. If Diggs is healthy—and that’s a big if—he becomes an instant WR1, a go-to option in an offense still searching for identity.

And what about that Scott Zolak chatter? The former Pats QB and current radio voice floated the idea of New England cutting Diggs before the season. That sounds a whole lot less likely now. Showing up to OTAs might’ve squashed that fire before it spread.

Diggs Walking the Line in New England

Stefon Diggs is walking a fine line between a high-profile veteran and a high-maintenance gamble in the NFL. But for now, he’s in Foxborough, in the building, and apparently locked in. What happens next? That’ll depend on his health, his chemistry with Maye, and whether the headlines stay on the field—or drift back to the open water.
