Ryan O’Hearn delivered the kind of performance that players spend entire careers chasing, and on Tuesday night at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder found himself in some of the rarest company Major League Baseball has to offer.

The Pirates rolled to a 12-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves, but the final score became almost secondary as O’Hearn put together a historic offensive explosion. He finished 4-for-5 at the plate, launched three home runs, and drove in a career-high 10 runs. It was a performance that immediately earned a place in the record books.

According to reports, O’Hearn became the first player to record at least 10 RBI in a single game since Shohei Ohtani accomplished the feat against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 19, 2024. That alone is remarkable, but the broader historical context makes the achievement even more extraordinary.

Ten-RBI games are among the rarest accomplishments in baseball history. There have been only 17 such games in the history of Major League Baseball. To put that in perspective, the sport has produced 24 perfect games, meaning pitchers have completed flawless outings more often than hitters have driven in 10 or more runs in a single contest. Even more remarkable, no player has ever recorded multiple 10-RBI games during a career.

The exclusive list includes several Hall of Fame legends, including Reggie Jackson, Jim Bottomley, and Tony Lazzeri. Ohtani is widely viewed as a future Hall of Famer based on what he has already accomplished as one of baseball’s most unique talents.

An Unlikely Name on an Exclusive List

Ryan O’Hearn’s career has followed a very different path. He turns 33 on July 26 and has built a respectable major league career across nine seasons with four organizations, including the Pirates. Before Tuesday’s game, he owned a career slash line of .256/.324/.426 and had earned one All-Star selection. Those numbers describe a dependable big leaguer rather than a perennial superstar, making his historic night even more unexpected.

Baseball has always had room for unforgettable performances from unlikely sources. On any given night, a player can produce something that stands alongside the greatest achievements the sport has ever seen, regardless of career accolades or future Hall of Fame prospects. O’Hearn’s outburst was one of those nights.

A Night Pirates Fans Won’t Forget

His teammates made sure the celebration matched the moment. During his postgame interview with SportsNet Pittsburgh’s Hannah Mears, they interrupted by dumping a bucket of cold water over him, adding another memorable scene to an already unforgettable evening. The celebration continued as O’Hearn reflected on the standing ovation he received from the home crowd.

“I’ve never had a curtain call… thank you, guys for that,” O’Hearn said. “That was awesome.”

Whether or not he ever receives another curtain call like that is impossible to know. Opportunities to create history this rare seldom come twice. But Tuesday night’s performance needs no follow-up to secure its place in baseball lore. Ryan O’Hearn joined one of the sport’s most exclusive clubs, and regardless of how the rest of his career unfolds, his name will forever be attached to one of the rarest offensive performances Major League Baseball has ever witnessed.
