The Boston Red Sox are not sitting idle this offseason, and their latest reported interest proves it.
Boston Targets Elite Catcher in J.T. Realmuto

According to reports, Boston is eyeing a potential upgrade behind the plate in veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto. While many around the league expect Realmuto to ultimately return to Philadelphia, the Red Sox seem ready to make their pitch, and that speaks volumes about their intentions for 2026.
Realmuto, now 34, has been a fixture for the Phillies since 2019 and remains one of the most respected catchers in the game. His resume speaks for itself: three All-Star nods, three Silver Sluggers, and two Gold Gloves, an all-around talent capable of managing a pitching staff as effectively as he produces at the plate. But time, as it does with all catchers, is starting to press its weight. Realmuto’s 2025 numbers were noticeably down.257 average, 12 homers, 52 RBIs across 134 games, and the concerns about wear and tear after twelve full seasons behind the dish are valid.
Realmuto Would Anchor a New-Look Red Sox Rotation
Still, for a Red Sox team coming off an 89-win season, the message here is clear: they’re going for it.
Boston already made waves earlier in the day by acquiring a former Cy Young finalist, signaling their intention to upgrade not just marginally, but significantly. Realmuto would represent a substantial addition, not only for his pedigree, but for what he could mean for the team’s new-look pitching staff. Leadership, game-calling, clubhouse presence, those intangibles become critical in October, and Realmuto brings them all.
Wong-Narvaez Duo Faces Uncertain Future
Currently, the Red Sox are rolling with a Carlos Narvaez–Connor Wong tandem at catcher. Serviceable? Sure. But Realmuto adds gravitas. He’s a win-now piece for a club that clearly doesn’t want to settle for second place in the AL East.
Will they land him? That’s still a long shot, especially with Philadelphia reportedly favored to retain its star. But the fact that Boston is even in the conversation signals a front office that is aggressive, intentional, and perhaps just getting started.
