The Atlanta Braves cannot keep playing musical chairs at shortstop. Since Dansby Swanson left after the 2022 season, the position has been a revolving door of names that just won’t stick. In 2026 alone, four different guys like Ha-Seong Kim and Jorge Mateo logged at least 38 games at the spot. It is time to stop settling for utility players and go get a real solution.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Marlins are willing to consider trade offers for both Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards. Lopez is the perfect target because he just had a massive breakout year. He led all of Major League Baseball with 191 hits and batted .305. He also brought plenty of speed to the game with 34 stolen bases. Per Yahoo Sports, Lopez was an All-Star in 2026 and posted a .786 OPS over 627 at-bats.
The Stats Behind the Solution
The defensive numbers for Lopez are exactly what Atlanta needs to stop the bleeding. According to reports, he ranked in the 95th percentile for fielding value and the 98th percentile in Outs Above Average. He might not have the elite arm strength, sitting in the 38th percentile, but his ability to make plays is elite. He also provides a high level of value on the paths, ranking in the 96th percentile for baserunning.
Fixing the Middle Infield Mess
I am tired of seeing players like Jim Jarvis make seven errors in 148 chances before going back to Triple-A. We also saw Ha-Seong Kim struggle with injuries and his bat. Getting Lopez solves the problem without needing a massive, expensive free agent deal. He is entering arbitration and stays under team control through 2029. That is the kind of smart, long-term building Alex Anthopoulos does best.
Some people worry about the cost of a trade within the division, but House That Hank Built notes that the right package can overcome that hurdle. The Marlins are known for moving stars before they hit big contracts. If the Braves can land a guy who hits .305 and plays great defense, it is worth the price. We cannot afford to keep rotating through guys who just fill a hole for a few weeks.
The Cost of Doing Nothing
The real danger is letting the window close while we wait for a “perfect” deal. The Marlins are “willing” to trade these infielders, but they aren’t out there hunting for buyers. Atlanta has to be the one to move. If we don’t act, we might end up stuck with a rotation that is constantly shuffling due to injuries. Lopez is a table-setter who can run and play solid defense around our power hitters, and we need that stability heading into 2027.
