The Yankees appear to be assembling their long-term outfield puzzle, and Jasson Dominguez may not be one of the pieces.
Right field is locked down. Aaron Judge, the undisputed face of the franchise, isn’t going anywhere, and his power bat remains one of the most feared in the sport. In center field, Trent Grisham has returned after accepting a qualifying offer, a move that gives the Yankees some much-needed defensive stability up the middle. Prospect Spencer Jones, whose rise through the system has garnered comparisons to a young Judge in both frame and potential, is expected to debut in 2026.
The Yankees Eye Proven Veterans Over Uncertainty
Meanwhile, in left field, the Yankees are chasing proven talent. Cody Bellinger, who had a strong campaign in the Bronx, is the clear priority. But the front office has its eyes on Astros slugger Kyle Tucker as a backup plan, a clear signal that it intends to add an established outfielder, even if it means breaking the bank.
Yet conspicuously absent from the conversation is Jasson Dominguez.
Once hailed as the “Martian”, a nickname born from his seemingly out-of-this-world talent, Dominguez burst onto the scene with four home runs in his first eight major league games in 2023. That glimpse of superstardom was abruptly cut short by a torn UCL that sidelined him for nearly a year.
Second-Half Struggles Cloud Future Value
He returned in 2025, and while his first-half numbers (.266/.343/.417) showed promise, his second-half slide (.236/.300/.318) was enough to raise eyebrows. More critically, it cost him playing time.
At just 23 years old entering 2026, Dominguez still has time to grow into the star many once projected he would become. But the Yankees face a conundrum: if they view him as no more than a fourth outfielder, is that the best use of his potential? Or his trade value?
Trade Chip or Key Contributor? Clock Is Ticking
With multiple holes across the roster and premium outfielders commanding steep prices in free agency, Dominguez could be moved in a package that nets New York pitching depth or infield help. His age, upside, and brief flashes of brilliance make him one of the more intriguing trade chips in baseball.
Still, the Yankees may find themselves boxed in. If Bellinger and Tucker sign elsewhere, they might be forced to keep Dominguez and hope for a breakout. But if the right deal presents itself, one that helps them win in 2026, the Martian could soon be orbiting a different galaxy.
