Detroit Tigers fans expected the conversation around top prospect Max Clark this spring to center on his development, athletic tools, and the next steps in his climb toward the Major Leagues. Instead, the discussion has shifted sharply toward something else entirely: the 21-year-old prospect’s increasingly flashy off-field persona.
A Social Media Post That Sparked Another Backlash

Clark, currently ranked No. 10 on MLB’s official prospect rankings, has drawn mounting criticism in recent weeks after repeatedly showcasing an extravagant lifestyle on social media. The latest episode followed his Instagram post of a slideshow from training camp in the Dominican Republic.
Most of the images appeared routine, snapshots of workouts, training moments, and glimpses of daily life at camp. But the final image quickly became the focal point of fan reaction.
The photo displayed what appeared to be a Louis Vuitton-style watch case opened to reveal a striking collection of luxury items. Inside the case sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills alongside four high-end watches: an Oris Aquis with a bright orange rubber strap, a Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer,” a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, and a Patek Philippe Nautilus, one of the most coveted watches in the luxury watch world.
Within hours, the image began circulating across social media, drawing sharp reactions from Tigers fans who felt the timing of the display could not have been worse.
Fans Question Clark’s Focus as Struggles Continue
The controversy arises during a stretch where Clark’s on-field performance has struggled to produce encouraging headlines.
In limited spring training action, the outfielder has recorded just two hits in 15 at-bats, producing a .133 batting average with five strikeouts and a modest .321 OPS. Defensive concerns have also surfaced after Clark committed multiple fielding errors during a recent appearance.
That same game sparked another round of criticism when Clark took the field wearing four diamond-encrusted chains. When asked about the backlash afterward, the young prospect offered a blunt response, saying he did not care what “haters” had to say.
For many fans following the organization’s rebuild, the latest Instagram post stoked a growing frustration.
Social media reactions ranged from disappointed encouragement to blunt criticism.
“I like the kid, I really do, but this is getting ridiculous. Focus on baseball!!” one fan wrote.
Another added, “I was on his side, not so sure anymore lol.”
Others were more direct. “Kid is trending in the wrong direction. When did this start? The ego?” one user asked.
A Rising Prospect Under an Increasing Spotlight
For a player once celebrated as a potential cornerstone of Detroit’s future, the situation highlights the delicate balance between hype, development, and public perception.
Clark remains one of the most talented young players in the Tigers’ system and continues to carry enormous expectations as he works through the minor league pipeline. But the attention surrounding his social media presence is beginning to overshadow the narrative of his growth as a player.
A few fans attempted to keep perspective, reminding others that Clark is still early in his professional career and learning how to navigate the spotlight that comes with being a top prospect. Others were far less patient, with some suggesting he should begin the season at Double-A to refocus on fundamentals.
For now, Clark’s talent remains undeniable, but the scrutiny surrounding his off-field image is growing louder. As spring training continues, the numbers he posts and the attention he chooses to draw may ultimately determine which storyline defines this stage of his young career.
