Two Problems, One Deal: Braves and Cubs’ Potential Trade Solution

The Braves have some big decisions to make this offseason, and a trade proposal from The Athletic’s Jim Bowden could provide a path to revitalize their roster. The idea? Atlanta would land Cody Bellinger and Nico Hoerner from the Cubs in exchange for Orlando Arcia, Jarred Kelenic, and pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep. The deal addresses several of Atlanta’s needs on paper, but it doesn’t come without challenges.

The Braves Need For A Shortstop

For the Braves, this trade could bring a much-needed upgrade at shortstop. Orlando Arcia had a strong 2023 season, even earning an All-Star nod, but he regressed in 2024, leaving a hole in the lineup. Nico Hoerner could fill that spot, offering a steady bat and versatility. While his .273 average and .708 OPS from 2024 aren’t eye-popping, they’re a step up from what Arcia provided last year.

Hoerner also has experience at shortstop, having made 128 starts there for the Cubs in 2022. However, his defensive metrics at the position aren’t stellar, which could be a concern for a team like Atlanta, which values strong fielding.

The Braves Need An Outfielder

The addition of Cody Bellinger would address another need. The Braves need more left-handed power, and Bellinger’s bat fits the bill. After signing a three-year, $80 million contract with the Cubs last offseason, he could test free agency again this year but chose to stay put for $27.5 million in 2025.

His salary could be a sticking point for the Braves unless Chicago agrees to eat some of the cost. Bellinger’s resurgence at the plate last season makes him an upgrade over Jarred Kelenic, whose potential hasn’t yet translated into consistent production.

Why The Braves May Not Be Interested

What makes this trade tricky is what Atlanta would give up, particularly Hurston Waldrep. The young right-hander has shown promise and could be a key piece for the Braves’ future rotation. Giving him up would be a significant gamble, especially considering the value of quality pitching in today’s game. However, with their immediate focus on reloading for a World Series push, the Braves may be willing to take that risk.

Upside For Both Teams

From Chicago’s perspective, the deal makes sense if they’re planning for the long term. Arcia provides a solid, affordable stopgap in the infield, while Kelenic still has the upside of developing into an everyday outfielder. Adding Waldrep to their system would give them another potential frontline starter to build around.

For Atlanta, this trade is about balancing the present with the future. Bellinger and Hoerner would improve the Braves on Opening Day 2025, but there’s a chance it could come back to bite them later if Waldrep becomes the ace many scouts believe he can be. It’s a high-stakes move that could either push the Braves back into championship contention or leave them questioning if the price was too steep.
