The Atlanta Braves rotation found a massive win even though the season ended in the NLDS. Most fans look at the exit against the Dodgers and see failure. They should be looking at the numbers from Tyler Mahle. The 32-year-old pitcher became a bright spot for the team during the final stretch of the year.

After the San Francisco Giants traded him in August, Mahle was nearly perfect. According to Sports Illustrated, Atlanta saw nine regular-season starts with a 1.99 ERA posted by him. He didn’t slow down when the pressure rose, either. He maintained a 1.35 ERA during his two postseason starts this year.

The Braves season ended on Wednesday. They lost the NLDS to the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 4-1 score in Game 4. This loss follows a 3-1 series defeat at the hands of the Dodgers. It follows a 2-1 series win against the Philadelphia Phillies in the Wild Card round.

The Case for Re-signing Mahle

The Braves staff dealt with many injuries throughout 2026. You cannot let a guy like Mahle walk away for nothing. His numbers are too good to ignore. While the front office has young arms like Didier Fuentes and JR Ritchie, those players are much cheaper internal options. That does not mean you pass on elite production.

Look at the stats from his time in Atlanta. A 1.99 ERA over nine starts is elite. You don’t find that kind of stability easily in a rotation that has been battered by injuries. If the Braves want to compete in 2027, they need a veteran who can eat innings and prevent runs. Re-signing him is the only move that makes sense for a team with championship goals.

The Decision for the 2027 Staff

The front office faces a tough choice. They can bet on the kids or pay for proven talent. Using Fuentes or Ritchie is the smart way to save money, but it is a huge risk. If Mahle hits free agency and signs elsewhere, Atlanta loses its most reliable recent starter. The rotation needs an anchor to support the young talent.

The Dodgers proved they are the team to beat when they won the series 3-1. Atlanta needs more than just potential to win a title. They need guys who can shut down lineups in October. Mahle has already shown he can do that in a Braves uniform. Do not let the pursuit of cheap options ruin the chance to build a powerhouse.

The Yankees and Padres are also facing big choices with players like David Bednar and Adrian Morejon. The Dodgers, however, proved they were the class of the NL in this series.
