Aaron Judge has built a career that already places him among the greatest hitters in New York Yankees history. Multiple American League MVP Awards, hundreds of home runs, and a massive long-term contract have established his place as one of baseball’s biggest stars. Yet when asked to identify the accomplishment that means the most to him, Judge didn’t point to any statistic, trophy, or record.

Speaking at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Thursday, Judge said the greatest honor of his career has been becoming captain of the Yankees. For a franchise with more than a century of history and countless legendary players, the title carries significance that extends well beyond individual performance.

“It’s the greatest honor of my career, by far,” Judge said. “The chance to be named the Yankee captain was probably my biggest career accolade.”

Those comments stand out considering everything Judge has accomplished on the field. He won the American League Most Valuable Player Award following the 2022 season before signing a nine-year, $360 million contract to remain in the Bronx. As part of that agreement, he became just the 16th captain in Yankees history, joining an exclusive group of players who have represented one of baseball’s most recognizable organizations.

His accomplishments have only continued to grow since then. Judge has added two more MVP Awards to his résumé and entered Friday ranked fourth on the Yankees’ all-time home run list with 385 career home runs. Those milestones alone would be enough to define most players’ careers, but Judge views leadership as the responsibility that matters most.

Judge explains what wearing the ‘C’ means every day

He explained that wearing the captain’s title is not something that can simply be accepted and taken for granted.

“It’s not something you’re just given once — you earn it every single day,” Judge said. “Every time you show up for practice, every time you show up for a game, you’re representing your team. But you’re also being an example to everybody on your team, ‘OK, this is how you prepare, this is how you work.’ This is why you’ve got the ‘C’ on your chest, because of how you prepare and play the game. So for me that’s the coolest part.”

Judge’s comments offer a glimpse into how he views the role. Rather than focusing on status or recognition, he emphasized consistency, preparation, and setting the standard for teammates every day. That approach has helped define his tenure as one of the faces of Major League Baseball and the leader of the Yankees clubhouse.

World Series pursuit and recovery remain the next challenges

There is still one achievement missing from Judge’s impressive résumé. The Yankees came closest to winning a championship in 2024, reaching the World Series before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. Bringing another championship to New York remains the ultimate team goal.

For now, Judge is focused on returning to the field after suffering a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side. The injury has kept him out of the lineup since the end of May, and current expectations suggest he may not return until sometime in September. Whenever he does make his way back, the Yankees will once again welcome not only one of the game’s most dangerous hitters, but also the captain who believes leadership must be earned every single day.
