With decisions on veteran players shaking up their roster, the Atlanta Braves are making big moves as they prepare for the 2025 season. With team options needing to be exercised or declined, the Braves wasted no time, making three critical moves on Monday that could shape their lineup and bullpen for next season.
Braves Decline Travis d’Arnaud Option
First, the Braves have declined their $8 million option on veteran catcher Travis d’Arnaud, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. This decision sends the 35-year-old backstop into free agency after a season where he hit .238 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs. Known for his solid defense and experience, d’Arnaud was part of the organization’s 2021 World Series championship team and has been a key player behind the plate.
Despite declining his option, the team may still look to re-sign him at a more team-friendly rate, possibly to continue pairing him with younger catcher Sean Murphy, who has taken on more of the load. Over his 12-year career, d’Arnaud has built a reputation as a consistent hitter, boasting a .248 career average with stints on the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, and, most recently, the Atlanta Braves.
Braves Decline Luke Jackson Option
In another cost-cutting move, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that the Braves declined the option on reliever Luke Jackson, which would have cost the team $7 million. Jackson, who at 33 struggled this season with a 4.50 ERA across just 16 appearances, was a past key bullpen piece for Atlanta. His recent injury setbacks, however, may have made the option too much of a gamble. The organization will now look to adjust their bullpen, perhaps seeking younger, more affordable relief options.
Atlanta Picks Up Marcell Ozuna Option
However, the Braves chose to retain one of their most productive hitters, picking up Marcell Ozuna’s $16 million option. At nearly 34, Ozuna showed he’s still got plenty of power. He smashed 39 home runs, driving in 104 runs, and batting an impressive .302 in a season that saw the team hit the National League wild card round.
Known for his durability and offensive presence, Ozuna has hit a career-high 40 homers as recently as last season and was instrumental in the Braves’ 2021 World Series win. Across 12 MLB seasons with the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Miami Marlins, Ozuna has maintained a .272 career average, making him a consistent and veteran presence in Atlanta’s lineup.
Braves Expected to Continue Making Moves
These roster moves reflect the Braves’ balancing act of retaining key offensive talent while strategically managing payroll. By cutting costs on d’Arnaud and Jackson, they free up funds that could be allocated to address other roster needs or even to bring back d’Arnaud at a more favorable price.

I do not agree with some of the moves Braves front office is making. I just read they are not picking up D’Arnaud’s contract, he is a better player all around than Murphy. Many moves last season made no logical sense to me. I can go on and on but will stop here. I have been a HUGE Braves fan since 1955 when the team was in Milwaukee, it concerns me greatly to see some of the things happening now. Still a concerned Braves fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
