The Atlanta Braves have suddenly found themselves in the middle of a high-profile coaching search, which is getting people talking. Just a few days ago, it was business as usual.
GM Alex Anthopoulos and manager Brian Snitker told everyone that the coaching staff was locked in for 2025. But yesterday, in a move that caught many off guard, the Braves announced they were parting ways with some of their key coaches, including long-time hitting coach Kevin Seitzer.
Now, the hunt is on to fill not one but two hitting coach roles. Considering the incredible offensive power Atlanta flexed in 2023, it’s safe to say this job is a golden opportunity, and a lot of big names are already being tossed around. Let’s dive into a few of the candidates who could step into these massive shoes.
Brian McCann
Let’s start with one of the most beloved Braves in franchise history—Brian McCann. A fan favorite behind the plate for years, McCann is now living the good life in retirement. He dipped his toes into coaching recently with Mark DeRosa during the World Baseball Classic. But do we really think he wants to grind out MLB seasons again? Fans would love to see it, but a 162-game commitment might be asking too much of the guy right now.
Edgar Martinez
Now, here’s a name that jumps off the page—Edgar Martinez. The man is a Hall of Famer with two batting titles and five Silver Slugger awards under his belt. If you want someone who knows hitting, Martinez is your guy. The tricky part may be convincing him to leave Seattle, where he spent his entire career.
The Mariners didn’t have the best offensive showing in 2024, but they did finish second in the American League in walks—something the Braves could definitely use. Could the chance to work with Atlanta’s powerhouse lineup be enough to pull him away from Seattle? Stay tuned.
Troy Snitker
Could 2025 see a father-son duo in the Braves dugout? Troy Snitker, son of manager Brian Snitker, has made quite a name for himself as the assistant hitting coach with the Houston Astros. His innovative approach to hitting has helped Houston remain one of the top offenses in baseball. With a family connection already in place, Troy could be a strong candidate to join the Braves coaching ranks and bring some of that Astros magic to Atlanta.
Chris Valaika
Chris Valaika is a rising star in the coaching world, helping guide the Cleveland Guardians to the brink of the ALCS in 2024. Cleveland didn’t have the most powerful lineup, but they excelled in situational hitting. That is something the Braves could definitely benefit from in their hopes for another World Series run. Valaika’s ability to fine-tune hitters and focus on the fundamentals could make him a great fit in Atlanta.
Barry Larkin
How about bringing some MVP experience into the mix? Former Cincinnati Reds superstar and current broadcaster, Barry Larkin, has expressed interest in coaching before. He’s even interviewed for a managerial job with the Rays in the past. Larkin’s knowledge of the game is unquestionable. The thought of working with guys like Ronald Acuña Jr., Austin Riley, and Matt Olson could be just the opportunity to pull him out of the booth and onto the field.
With all these talented names in the mix, one thing’s for sure: the Braves have no shortage of options. Whether they go with a franchise legend or bring in some fresh blood, the decision they make could play a crucial role in their success for 2025 and beyond.
