The Atlanta Braves are reportedly interested in free-agent shortstop Willy Adames. This would be a move that could significantly enhance their roster for the 2025 season. He excelled in high-pressure situations, hitting .293 with a 1.073 OPS with runners in scoring position. Out of his career-high 32 home runs, 18 of them came in clutch moments. That stat ranks him among the top performers in such scenarios. His OPS in these situations was the eighth-best in the league, highlighting his ability to deliver under pressure.
This contrasts sharply with the performance of Atlanta’s current shortstop Orlando Arcia. Although Arcia hit 17 home runs and drove in 46 RBIs across 157 games, he struggled significantly with runners in scoring position, posting a league-worst .155 batting average. The difference in offensive reliability between Arcia and Adames is striking.
Adames also brings consistent power and durability. His .251 batting average may not stand out, but his 65 extra-base hits, including 32 home runs, demonstrate his ability to influence games. His walk rate of 10.8% further increases his value, and his solid defensive skills make him a well-rounded player.
Adames is expected to secure a substantial contract. After earning $12.25 million in 2024, Spotrac projects his market value is $25.4 million annually over six years, or $152.2 million total. This would place him among the league’s top-paid shortstops. While the Braves have the financial capability to make this deal, competition from teams like the Dodgers and others in the AL East could drive up the cost.
If Atlanta manages to sign Adames, they will address a key weakness at shortstop while adding a reliable offensive weapon. His track record makes him a prime target in a competitive offseason. The Braves’ ability to outbid many rivals could shape their success in 2025 and beyond.
