The Atlanta Braves hunt for outfield reinforcements continues, but the saga around Taylor Ward has taken some intriguing twists and turns. Early December rumors suggested that Ward, the Los Angeles Angels’ standout left fielder, was being actively shopped.

Reports from The Athletic’s David O’Brien and MLB.com’s Mark Bowman quickly clarified that if a trade was imminent, the Braves weren’t in the mix. At least, not at that time they were not.

Fast forward to mid-December, and the Ward-to-Braves buzz reignited. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Ward remained on the trade block, fueling speculation that Atlanta could still be in play.

Bowman and O’Brien acknowledged this development, adding his own take: “I still think he’d be a great fit for the Braves.” And fit he would—given Atlanta’s struggles in left field, Ward’s versatility and recent performance would fill a glaring need.

Ward’s 2024 season may not have been his absolute peak, but it was still impressive. He posted career highs in home runs (25), RBIs (75), and games played (156). His 111 OPS+ was solidly above league average, and his defense shone with a league-leading five outfield assists.

This level of production would mark a significant upgrade for the Braves, whose left fielders collectively managed a meager .229/.278/.364 slash line and a 79 OPS+ last season.

The Atlanta Braves Have Made a Few Moves

The Braves have made some smaller moves to address their outfield depth, signing Bryan De La Cruz and Conner Capel to non-guaranteed and minor league deals, respectively. Additionally, Jarred Kelenic and Eli White remain in the mix.

Yet, these are depth pieces, not the starting-caliber bat and glove that Ward would provide. His ability to seamlessly transition between left and right field would also be critical, especially with Ronald Acuña Jr. periodically sidelined.

Beyond the speculation, the Braves and Angels have developed an interesting trade pipeline. The two franchises seem linked from Atlanta trading Jorge Soler for pitcher Griffin Canning (who has since signed with the Mets) to Travis d’Arnaud joining the Angels and Sal Fasano moving to Anaheim as an assistant pitching coach.

The Braves’ most recent move—a trade for right-handed pitcher Davis Daniel in exchange for minor-league lefty Mitch Farris—shows they are unafraid to deal with Anaheim. Could Taylor Ward be the next piece in this transactional puzzle?

It’s a waiting game for Atlanta fans, but one thing’s clear: Ward would bring much-needed stability and star power to the Braves’ outfield.
