The Lincoln Saltdogs picked up a 7-5 win on Tuesday night, but much of the attention after the game centered on manager James Frisbie and an explosive argument that quickly spiraled into one of the wildest ejections seen in independent baseball this season.
Frisbie, back for his first season managing the Saltdogs after several years in affiliated professional baseball, erupted during Lincoln’s game against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Nebraska. The confrontation began after a disputed call at first base, where a Saltdogs player was ruled out.
A Routine Argument Quickly Escalates
Leaving the dugout to challenge the decision, Frisbie exchanged words with the umpire in an increasingly heated discussion. The situation escalated when the umpire tossed him from the game. For many managers, that would have marked the end of the dispute. For Frisbie, it was only the beginning.
Immediately after being ejected, Frisbie slammed his helmet to the ground with both hands and continued shouting toward the officiating crew. The veteran manager then stormed toward a second umpire as his frustration boiled over. What followed turned an ordinary argument into a memorable spectacle.
Frisbie Takes His Frustration to Another Level
Frisbie repeatedly kicked at the dirt near the basepath, drawing reactions from players and fans alike. The outburst reached another level when he grabbed first base itself and ripped it from the field before launching it away in dramatic fashion. The bizarre scene left the umpires standing by as Frisbie continued venting his anger.
Even after appearing to calm down and heading back toward the dugout, the manager was not finished. Just as it looked like the incident was over, Frisbie turned around and delivered one final verbal barrage at the umpires before finally departing the field.
A video of the meltdown quickly circulated, capturing every stage of the confrontation and ensuring the incident would become one of the most talked-about moments of the American Association season.
Saltdogs Capitalize After the Ejection
While Frisbie’s actions are likely to draw scrutiny and could result in league discipline, the immediate scoreboard outcome worked in Lincoln’s favor. The Saltdogs rallied to secure a 7-5 victory over Winnipeg, giving the home crowd a win to go along with the night’s unexpected entertainment.
Frisbie’s return to Lincoln this season followed a lengthy stint away from the organization. After leaving the Saltdogs in 2021, he joined the Detroit Tigers organization and spent two seasons there. He then moved to the Washington Nationals organization, where he spent the next three seasons before returning to manage Lincoln.
Whether the ejection becomes a rallying point for the club or simply a memorable footnote remains to be seen. What is certain is that Frisbie’s reaction transformed a routine disagreement over a call at first base into a scene that few in attendance will soon forget.
