The Atlanta Braves are still one of the National League’s top teams by record, but their recent stretch has raised concerns. After dropping 13 of their last 17 games, Atlanta’s once-comfortable position in the NL East has tightened considerably. The Braves now hold only a 2.5-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies, who have steadily gained ground while Atlanta’s offense has struggled to find consistency.

One of the biggest storylines during the team’s difficult stretch has been the prolonged slump of third baseman Austin Riley. Expected to be one of the cornerstones of the Braves’ lineup, Riley has instead endured one of the toughest seasons of his career through 83 games. He is batting .207 with eight home runs, 37 RBIs, and 62 hits. His Baseball Reference WAR currently sits at 0.0, reflecting a season in which he has yet to provide the level of production the Braves have come to expect.

The numbers become even more noticeable when viewed alongside Riley’s long-term commitment to the franchise. His contract, worth more than $150 million, remains the largest deal in Braves history, making his performance a focal point as Atlanta searches for answers during its recent downturn.

Following Tuesday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, Riley did not attempt to downplay his struggles. Speaking with reporters, he offered a candid assessment of where things stand.

“Personally, it hasn’t been good. It’s been terrible. Awful, everything in between. You know, I’m just trying to figure it out, trying to get in a good position to be able to compete up there. Obviously, not doing that right now. So, just trying to take it day-by-day and work every day with Tim (Hyers) and those guys, and in the cage. At some point, you would think it would start turning.”

Braves continue searching for offensive consistency

Tim Hyers, Atlanta’s hitting coach, has been working closely with Riley as he attempts to break out of the slump. For now, Riley’s approach remains focused on daily adjustments rather than a quick fix.

Extended slumps are part of baseball, even for accomplished hitters. A long season often tests a player’s ability to remain patient while making mechanical and mental adjustments. Riley’s comments reflected that reality, acknowledging both the severity of his struggles and his belief that continued work is the only path forward.

NL East race begins to tighten

Despite the recent slide, the Braves remain 49-34, a record that would place many clubs in a favorable position. However, the margin for error has narrowed. As the Phillies continue to apply pressure in the division race, Atlanta will need more consistent production from the middle of its lineup if it hopes to maintain its place atop the NL East. Riley’s ability to rediscover his form could become one of the defining factors in how the remainder of the Braves’ season unfolds.
