The Atlanta Braves appear poised for significant roster turnover this offseason, and one of the biggest names who could be on the way out is veteran slugger Marcell Ozuna.
Multiple reports indicate that the Braves explored potential trades involving Ozuna at the deadline — but the 10-and-5 rights he’s earned as a veteran player complicated any deal.
“It’s possible that while Anthopoulos was discussing trades, he couldn’t agree on a deal that Ozuna’s agent could also sign off on,” Sports Illustrated’s Harrison Smajovits reported. “Just because Ozuna is leaving the deadline out of his hands doesn’t mean the 10-5 rights go out the window.”
Aging bat, shrinking market
Ozuna’s offensive production has dipped in recent seasons, and his value as a designated hitter may be limited given how teams are rethinking roster flexibility.
“The problem Ozuna faces now is that he has only gotten older, his performance last season was subpar at best,” wrote House That Hank Built’s Eric Cole. “The teams that were previously considered to be landing spots for him feel unlikely to pursue him this offseason.”
At age 35, and with his defensive days largely behind him, Ozuna’s best path forward may come outside Atlanta — even if the return for the Braves is minimal.
Braves turning the page
While Ozuna remains well-liked in the clubhouse, the Braves’ roster construction leaves little room for a one-dimensional DH.
“He’s also highly respected in the clubhouse and could end up being a sneaky value signing for someone this offseason,” ATL Sports Talk’s Chase Irle wrote. “That said, it’s time for both sides to move on. With Ronald Acuña Jr.’s durability in question and Drake Baldwin needing more at-bats, Atlanta simply can’t afford to carry another player who’s strictly a designated hitter.”
The Braves are expected to make several strategic roster changes this winter, prioritizing youth, flexibility, and improved defensive depth. Ozuna’s exit — once unthinkable during his peak — now feels inevitable.
End of an era in Braves Country
Once a fan favorite for his bat and personality, Ozuna’s time in Atlanta has clearly run its course. His 2025 free agency will likely bring a fresh start for both sides — and mark another chapter in the Braves’ evolving roster under Alex Anthopoulos.
This winter could be a “dumping” offseason for Atlanta, as several veterans may be shown the door to make way for the next wave of contributors.
