Braves Bolster Depth with Reunion Signing of Former Left-Hander

The Atlanta Braves are bringing back a familiar face, as they’ve agreed to a deal with left-handed pitcher Chasen Shreve.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, it’s a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training.

And if Shreve manages to make the big league roster, he’ll pocket $1.3 million in 2025. Not a bad deal for a guy who’s been on quite the rollercoaster ride over the past few seasons.

Shreve’s Journey Back to Atlanta

Shreve's Journey Back to Atlanta

Braves fans might remember Shreve from a long time ago. The team originally drafted him in 2010, and he made his MLB debut with Atlanta in 2014. But his time in Georgia was short-lived, as he was shipped off to the Yankees that offseason.

From there, Shreve embarked on a classic journeyman’s path, bouncing around the league, picking up innings wherever he could, and now—more than a decade later—finding his way back to where it all started.

A Bumpy 2024 Season with Plenty of Stops

Last season? Well, it was a bit of a whirlwind for Shreve. He managed just a single inning of work in the Majors with the Colorado Rockies, where he tossed a scoreless frame while allowing a hit.

The rest of his year? Let’s just say it involved a lot of packing and unpacking. He started in Triple-A with the Texas Rangers affiliate, the Round Rock Express, but was released in May.

A couple of weeks later, the Rangers gave him another shot, only to release him again after another month. Then the Yankees stepped in, signing him to pitch for their Triple-A squad in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. You guessed it—another release.

Finally, Shreve landed with the Rockies’ Triple-A team, the Albuquerque Isotopes, pitched a single game, got called up to the big leagues, and found himself designated for assignment shortly after.

After all that, he opted for free agency, hoping to find a more stable opportunity.

A Real Shot at the Braves Bullpen

Despite all the moving around, Shreve put up solid numbers in Triple-A last year.

In 31 appearances, he posted an impressive 2.62 ERA with a 0.845 WHIP across 34 1/3 innings. That kind of performance is bound to catch the eye of a team like the Braves, especially with a glaring need in their bullpen.

With AJ Minter now wearing Mets colors, Atlanta has a spot up for grabs in the bullpen, and Shreve will get his shot to compete for it this spring. At 34 years old, he’s hoping to prove he’s still got plenty left in the tank.

And hey, if his numbers from last season are any indication, he just might carve out a role for himself.
