Braves SS Ha-Seong Kim’s return is no longer a distant projection; it’s beginning to take shape in real time, one rehab game at a time. Assigned to Double-A Columbus, Kim has quietly put together a solid four-game stretch, hitting .333 with an .871 OPS and adding a stolen base. The numbers are modest in sample size but meaningful in context, especially given the nature of his recovery.

On Sunday, Kim logged a 1-for-4 performance with a walk, marking his third game with a hit in the four he’s played. That consistency, even in limited action, suggests his timing at the plate is not far off. More telling, however, is how the Braves are handling his workload. He appeared as a designated hitter in that game, a clear signal that the focus remains on controlled progression rather than immediate defensive reintegration.

A Careful Climb Back to Full Strength

When Kim has taken the field during this rehab stint, his appearances have been brief. He’s exiting games early, mirroring the pacing of spring training rather than regular-season endurance. The approach is deliberate. Recovering from surgery on his right middle finger, Kim is being brought along with caution, building both strength and durability without risking setbacks. Initially projected to miss time into June, his current trajectory suggests he may beat that timeline.

The Braves’ decision to re-sign Kim in December on a one-year, $20 million deal now carries added intrigue. After declining a $16 million player option, Kim secured a slight increase while returning to a team where he found comfort, particularly with infield coach Walt Weiss. According to agent Scott Boras, that familiarity played a role in Kim’s decision, with Weiss’ defensive expertise standing out as a key factor.

Production, Context, and What Comes Next

Before the injury, Kim’s production hinted at more than what the surface numbers showed. In 24 games, he hit .253 with a .684 OPS, along with three home runs and 12 RBIs. Those figures included a late-season dip that dragged down his overall line. Prior to that stretch, he was hitting .289 with a .770 OPS, a more accurate reflection of his form.

Atlanta’s offense, meanwhile, has not stalled in his absence. The team leads baseball in runs scored with 194, holds a .794 OPS, and sits second in home runs with 48. Contributions from Mauricio Dubón and Jorge Mateo at shortstop have stabilized the position, buying time for Kim’s return.

Still, the Braves understand the value of depth, especially in a season already shaped by injuries. Kim’s steady progress offers more than just reinforcement; it adds another layer to a roster that has managed to produce despite constant adjustments.
