Braves Stumble Into History For the Wrong Reason

The start to this 2025 season has been brutal, there’s not other way to view it. The Atlanta Braves are 0-6. That’s not just a bad start — it’s a historically bad one. And when history starts creeping in this early in the season, you know the vibes aren’t good.

And this isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Braves, unfortunately. This is the sixth time since 1901 that they’ve kicked off a season with six L’s and the fourth time since making Atlanta home in 1966.

Here’s the kicker: every one of those seasons ended in disappointment. Sure, they scraped together a winning record in 1980, but 81-80 isn’t exactly parade-worthy. The rest? Think 93 or even 106 losses.

The historical precedent here is bleak. The Braves have never made the playoffs after starting 0-6. That’s a clean zero-for. And while the “never” part is heavy, the league-wide stats aren’t exactly inspiring either.

Only three teams in Major League history have clawed their way into the postseason after an 0-6 stumble. The 2011 Tampa Bay Rays are the most recent miracle workers, and even they sank to 1-8 before rebounding.

So yes, the door is technically open. But it’s about the size of a mail slot, and the Braves need a battering ram to squeeze through it.

This isn’t one of those “everything is falling apart” meltdowns. The pitching? Honestly, not bad. When your staff holds the Dodgers to three runs, that’s a game you can win.

But not when you’ve scored two runs since Game 2. And not when you’re putting up a nightmarish 1-for-34 with runners in scoring position. That’s not a slump — that’s a season-defining deficiency if it doesn’t change fast.

Tuesday night, they went 0-for-6 in those high-leverage spots. They had six chances to shift the game with nothing to show for it. It’s not just frustrating — it’s deflating for the fans, the dugout, and the starters throwing quality innings that go to waste.

If they had just barely managed to hit in those moments, this team could realistically be sitting at 2-4. Still rough, but a whole different emotional landscape. Early wins don’t guarantee anything in a long season, but they sure do insulate you when the inevitable cold stretches come later.

But instead of turning the tide, the Braves are flirting with infamy. Twenty-nine teams have started 0-7 in MLB history. None — not one — made the playoffs. Only two even managed to finish with a winning record. That’s not a trend. That’s a wall.

So, tonight becomes a must-win in April. Not because the math says it but because the weight of history is about to slam shut the little crack of hope still lingering. If they’re going to flip the script, it has to start right now. Bryce Elder will be on the mound tonight, and Atlanta’s bats need to have his back.
