Braves Three-Time All-Star Merrifield Set to Test Free Agency Waters

The Atlanta Braves season came to a tough end Wednesday night as the San Diego Padres eliminated them without winning a single playoff game. It marked the first time since 2017 that the Braves failed to secure at least one postseason victory. A season filled with injuries, forcing them to sign players like Merrifield, finally caught up to the team. Key players like Ronald Acuña Jr., Spencer Strider, Austin Riley, and Chris Sale were all unavailable by the time October rolled around.

In the middle of these challenges, the Braves made a move to bring in veteran Whit Merrifield, hoping his experience could help stabilize the team’s battered infield. That move did help, as Merrifield was able to provide some much-needed consistency down the stretch. Despite their injuries, the Braves hung on to secure them a Wild Card spot in the playoffs.

Now that the season is over, though, it seems Merrifield’s time in Atlanta will be short-lived. Cody Williams from FanSided recently listed him as one of five Braves who “definitely won’t be back” after their postseason struggles. Over his 42 games with the team, Merrifield hit .248/.348/.336 and served as a useful stopgap for a roster that was dealing with constant injury setbacks. But looking ahead, the Braves are expected to focus on younger, more dynamic options as they try to avoid another injury-riddled season in 2025.

Merrifield’s year was a roller coaster in itself. He signed a one year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, but his time there didn’t go as planned. The Phillies never found a solid role for him and released him in late July.

The Braves picked him up soon after being released which gave him a chance to rebuild his value ahead of free agency this winter. While his best days may be behind him, Merrifield’s versatility and veteran presence could still make him an asset for another team.

He’s no longer the same player who led the American League in hits twice or made three All-Star teams, but Merrifield should still find a landing spot somewhere in the league. His ability to play multiple positions and provide leadership will likely earn him one more opportunity to stick around in the majors. Where that opportunity comes from, though, is anyone’s guess at this point. The Braves have a number of decisions to make regarding free agent players.
