Braves Welcome Back Key Player for Showdown Against Dodgers

Date:

The Atlanta Braves are getting a big boost to their lineup just in time for a critical showdown against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as veteran utility man Whit Merrifield returns from injury. This is great news for the Braves, who have dealt with injuries all year.

This couldn’t come at a better time for the Braves, who are locked in a fierce battle for the final National League wildcard spot. After missing the last five games with a fractured foot, Merrifield is back in action, starting at second base and batting ninth as Atlanta kicks off a crucial four-game series at Truist Park.

Merrifield’s injury occurred back on September 6 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays, when he fouled a pitch off his left foot. It was a tough break for the 35-year-old, who had already missed two games prior due to a head injury from a hit by pitch. He had a strong opinion on the head injury, which you can see below.

Since signing with Atlanta in July to help fill the void left by Ozzie Albies’ fractured wrist, Merrifield has had an up-and-down stint, slashing .243/.359/.342 over 34 games. Though his versatility has been invaluable, Merrifield has struggled at the plate recently, managing only two hits and racking up seven strikeouts in his last 25 at-bats.

Nevertheless, his return couldn’t be more timely. With the Braves sitting just one game behind the New York Mets in the wildcard race, they’re on the edge of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Every game counts, and this series against the powerhouse Dodgers is pivotal.

Merrifield’s return adds a reliable glove and experienced bat to the lineup, even if he’s hitting ninth, and it’ll be interesting to see how quickly he shakes off the rust. First pitch is set for 7:20 p.m., and with postseason hopes on the line, you can bet Atlanta fans will be holding their breath as they watch their team fight to keep their playoff dreams alive.
