At 64, the Yankees legend isn’t slowing down. After reaching his first World Series as bench coach for the Blue Jays, Mattingly has taken on a new challenge: serving as bench coach for the Philadelphia Phillies. But this move is more than a typical reshuffling of the MLB coaching carousel; this one carries personal weight. For the first time in his long and storied baseball career, Don Mattingly will be working alongside his son, Preston Mattingly, who currently serves as the Phillies’ general manager.

From Captain in Pinstripes to Bench Boss

Mattingly’s playing career remains etched in Yankees history. A career-long Bomber, he collected nine Gold Gloves, six All-Star selections, and one MVP title, becoming one of the most beloved figures in the Bronx despite never capturing a World Series ring. His post-playing days were no less impactful: he managed the Dodgers to three straight division titles from 2013–15 and held steady during a challenging rebuild with the Marlins from 2016 to 2022. In Toronto, he finally got a taste of the Fall Classic, albeit not as a manager.

Don Mattingly Reunites With Son – Power Duo

Now in Philadelphia, he joins a team poised for another deep October run, bringing with him not just decades of experience but also the kind of strategic presence that elevates a clubhouse. And perhaps most importantly, he’s doing it alongside his son.

For the Mattinglys, 2026 won’t just be about wins and losses. It’ll be about legacy, trust, and a bond that spans generations, brought together under the bright lights of Citizens Bank Park.
