Gio Urshela’s major league career has officially come to an end. The veteran infielder announced on Instagram that he is retiring after 10 seasons in Major League Baseball, closing the book on a career that took him across multiple organizations and included some memorable stretches in New York and Atlanta. As part of the announcement, Urshela shared a tribute graphic featuring every team he played for during his career, complete with photos in each uniform and the club logos lined up chronologically across the bottom. For Braves fans, Urshela’s time in Atlanta was brief but important.

He joined the Braves late in the 2024 season after Austin Riley suffered a broken hand that suddenly left the club scrambling for stability at third base during a playoff race. Atlanta turned to Urshela after the Detroit Tigers released him, and the veteran immediately stepped into a pressure-filled situation without much adjustment time.

He delivered exactly what the Braves needed.

In 36 regular-season games with Atlanta, Urshela hit .265 with a .711 OPS, four home runs, and 15 RBIs while providing dependable defense at third base. He also appeared in two postseason games as the Braves fought to keep their season alive. Atlanta ultimately finished with 89 wins and clinched the second National League Wild Card spot on the final day of the regular season.

It was not the flashiest stretch of Urshela’s career, but it was another example of the role he carved out across a decade in the majors: reliable defense, professional at-bats, and the ability to stabilize an infield when teams needed help.

Final MLB Stop Came With Athletics

After his stint with the Braves, Urshela signed with the Athletics for the 2025 season, which was his final year in the major leagues. He later joined the Minnesota Twins on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training in 2026, but the club released him near the end of March.

Even as his MLB opportunities slowed, Urshela continued representing Colombia on the international stage. During spring training this year, he suited up once again for his home country during the World Baseball Classic cycle. Including qualifier appearances, it marked the fourth time he represented Colombia, following previous appearances in 2012, 2017, and 2023.

Yankees Years Defined His Career Peak

While Urshela played for several organizations throughout his career, his peak years came with the New York Yankees from 2019 through 2021. That stretch transformed him from a journeyman infielder into a fan favorite in the Bronx. He posted the best offensive numbers of his career during that run while becoming known for his steady glove and timely hitting.

Now, after a decade in the majors and stops with multiple franchises, Urshela is stepping away from the game with a reputation as one of baseball’s most dependable infield veterans of the last several years.
