Chaos erupted in the stands during the MLB game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets, with footage showing fans trading punches, kicks, and shoves as frightened spectators scrambled away from the violence.
The fight at Guaranteed Rate Field spread across much of a seating section while the White Sox were on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Mets. Video circulating from the scene showed several men involved in the confrontation, although it remains unclear what triggered the initial dispute.
As the fighting intensified, nearby spectators tried to put distance between themselves and the melee.
“There’s a kid,” one fan could be heard shouting as screams and gasps came from others watching the confrontation.
MLB Fan Launches Feet First Into the Fight
One of the most dramatic moments came when a fan several rows above another man appeared to launch himself feet first down the seats. He struck and stomped the man below him in the stomach area. The man on the receiving end then grabbed the airborne fan by his shirt and sent him tumbling farther down the rows.
Other people could be seen punching, shoving, and stomping amid the seats while bystanders attempted to escape the immediate area.
The ugly scene came only days after another Chicago baseball game was disrupted by violence in the stands.
During the Crosstown Classic at Wrigley Field, Cubs and White Sox fans were filmed brawling during the Cubs’ 7-5 victory. Social media footage from that confrontation showed punches being thrown and drinks flying as roughly a dozen men became involved.
Wrigley Field Brawl Led to Three Arrests
One man appeared to absorb a barrage of punches while attempting to defend himself. Security personnel and police eventually moved into the section and separated the involved parties.
According to reports, police arrested three people after the incident. A 41-year-old man was charged with misdemeanor battery and felony possession of cocaine. Two other men, ages 33 and 29, were charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass.
Video from Wrigley Field showed an elderly security worker attempting to keep two groups apart before one man kicked toward another person and the confrontation exploded into a larger fight.
The violence did not appear to break neatly along team loyalties. Fans wearing Cubs jerseys were seen striking other Cubs supporters, while numerous spectators stood nearby recording the incident. One man was later filmed leaving the area with blood running down the side of his face.
That was not the only recent incident at Wrigley Field to spread across social media. Separate footage appearing to show a Cubs fan shoving a woman while trying to retrieve a home run ball also drew angry reactions online.
Tristan Peters Delivers a Walk-Off Winner
Back at Guaranteed Rate Field on Sunday, the action on the field produced plenty of late drama without any help from the stands.
The Mets tied the game in the top of the ninth inning, but Tristan Peters answered in the bottom half. Peters connected against Kodai Senga and drove the ball 406 feet into the center-field seats for a walk-off home run.
The blast secured a 2-1 White Sox victory, Chicago’s 11th walk-off win of the season and its second of the series.
For the second time in less than a week, however, footage of fans fighting became an unwanted sideshow to a Chicago baseball game.
