There are plenty of ups and downs packed into a 162-game baseball season, but every team reaches a point where the losses start to feel heavier than the standings alone suggest. For the Braves, Wednesday night’s 5-2 defeat to the Padres in San Diego had that kind of feeling. It wasn’t just another loss. It was their fourth straight, and the frustration surrounding a club that once seemed to be cruising has become impossible to ignore.

Even with the skid, Atlanta still sits at 48-31, but the cushion continues to shrink. The Phillies have refused to go away, finding dramatic ways to win game after game while the Braves struggle to capitalize on opportunities. What once looked like a comfortable division lead has become much less secure, and the contrast between the two clubs has only made Atlanta’s recent stretch feel even more discouraging.

Offensively, the Braves once again came up empty when they needed timely hitting the most. Joey Bart provided the only real spark with a sixth-inning home run that briefly cut the deficit to 3-2 and offered a glimpse of life. For a few moments, it appeared the momentum might finally be shifting.

San Diego answered in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs, including a softly hit 65 mph blooper that somehow found the perfect spot. It was the kind of play that seems to define a difficult month, where even weak contact turns into damaging hits and every small break seems to go against you. Before the Braves had a chance to build on Bart’s homer, they were staring at another three-run deficit.

The missed opportunities earlier in the game were just as costly. Atlanta loaded the bases in the fourth inning and failed to score. They also put two runners aboard in the second without producing a run. Those empty innings have become a recurring theme, and they continue to prevent the offense from gaining any rhythm. It’s difficult to overcome those missed chances, particularly when portions of the lineup are struggling to provide consistent production. With players such as Austin Riley, Eli White, Jorge Mateo, and Ha-Seong Kim occupying significant spots in the order, the lack of offensive depth has become increasingly noticeable.

Perez Battles Through a Short Start

Martin Perez never found his best command, lasting four innings while allowing four hits and issuing four walks. He battled through traffic throughout his outing but couldn’t keep the Padres from building an early lead. The bullpen handled the final four innings reasonably well overall, though the two runs surrendered in the sixth effectively ended any realistic comeback hopes.

Atlanta’s pitching staff kept the game within reach for much of the night despite Perez’s abbreviated outing, but without consistent offensive support, there was little margin for error. Every missed opportunity at the plate placed additional pressure on the pitching staff to be nearly perfect.

Searching for a Reset

Now comes an off day that may be arriving at the perfect time. The Braves have little choice but to regroup, search for solutions, and hope a brief reset can stop the slide before it becomes more damaging. Their next opportunity comes Friday night in San Francisco, with first pitch scheduled for 10:15 p.m. ET.

The standings still favor Atlanta, but the recent stretch has made it clear that nothing can be taken for granted. The Braves will look to halt their losing streak against the Giants and rediscover the consistency that carried them through the first half of the season.
