Cristopher Sánchez keeps stacking zeros, and now he’s rewriting Phillies history in the process.

The Phillies left-hander delivered another dominant performance, shutting down the Padres over seven scoreless innings in Philadelphia’s 3-0 victory. Sánchez allowed six hits, struck out nine, and never let San Diego generate any sustained offense. By the time he walked off the mound, his scoreless streak had reached 44.2 innings.

That number officially pushed Sánchez past one of the oldest pitching records in franchise history. The previous Phillies mark belonged to Hall of Famer Pete Alexander, who threw 41 consecutive scoreless innings back in 1911. More than a century later, Sánchez now stands alone at the top.

The streak also placed him in rare territory across Major League Baseball.

With his latest outing, Sánchez joined Dodgers legend Orel Hershiser as the only pitchers in the modern era to throw more than 30 innings in a calendar month without allowing a single run. Hershiser accomplished the feat during his historic September run in 1988, the same season he set the MLB record with 59 consecutive scoreless innings.

Now Sánchez is climbing the all-time leaderboard himself.

According to reports, the Phillies starter now owns the seventh-longest scoreless streak of the live-ball era, which dates back to 1920. His 44.2 consecutive scoreless innings also rank as the 11th-longest streak in Major League history.

Historic Names Are Within Reach

Sánchez is rapidly closing in on several more legendary pitchers.

One more scoreless outing would allow him to tie Cy Young, Doc White, and Sal Maglie for eighth place on the all-time list at 45 consecutive innings. He is also approaching Bob Gibson’s famous 47-inning streak from the 1968 season. If Sánchez records eight more outs before surrendering a run, he would move past Gibson as well.

The company surrounding his name now reads like a Hall of Fame ballot. Every inning without a run pushes him deeper into baseball history and adds more pressure on opposing lineups trying to end the streak.

Phillies Ace Looks Nearly Untouchable

What makes the run even more impressive is how complete Sánchez has looked throughout the stretch. He has not simply escaped jams; he has controlled games from start to finish. Hitters are struggling to square him up, his command has remained sharp deep into games, and his confidence appears to grow with every outing.

At this point, every start carries historical significance.

Hershiser’s all-time record of 59 scoreless innings still sits well ahead, but Sánchez continues to move closer with each dominant appearance. Given the way he has pitched over the last month, the possibility no longer feels unrealistic.
