The Atlanta Braves are rapidly approaching a breaking point in their 2025 campaign. At 32-39, they’re not only well behind the NL East-leading Mets but also sitting seven games out of a Wild Card spot. Despite public insistence from GM Alex Anthopoulos that the team won’t sell, the standings may eventually force his hand.

If that happens, Marcell Ozuna becomes one of Atlanta’s most valuable chips. Even while dealing with a nagging hip injury, the veteran designated hitter is turning in a productive season. His .389 OBP and career-best 17.4% walk rate are proof he’s still an offensive weapon—and with few power hitters likely to be available at the deadline, Ozuna becomes a premium rental bat.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand named Ozuna among his “prime trade candidates” and spotlighted three contending teams as potential landing spots.

Cleveland Guardians

The Guardians are built on pitching and defense, but they’ve lacked a second middle-of-the-order threat behind José Ramírez all season. Ozuna would give them a much-needed offensive boost, especially in terms of OBP and veteran presence.

The sticking point? Money. Cleveland rarely takes on significant salary at the deadline, and Ozuna’s remaining $16 million could be a hurdle. Atlanta may have to cover part of the deal to get a deal done or accept a lesser return. But in terms of lineup needs? Cleveland’s as good a fit as any.

Texas Rangers

Yes, the 2023 World Series champs have been one of the most puzzling underperformers in the league this season. Their offense, in particular, has gone ice-cold—something few expected after last year’s explosive run.

Ozuna could help jumpstart the lineup as a reliable designated hitter with on-base skills and a history of clutch postseason moments. But Texas’ front office needs to decide quickly if they’re legitimate buyers. They may pass on rental bats entirely if they stay stuck in the middle.

Detroit Tigers

Don’t sleep on this one. Detroit has quietly climbed to the top of the AL Central, and their young core is starting to click. Still, they lack serious power production, especially compared to fellow contenders. Enter Ozuna.

He’d bring veteran leadership, postseason experience, and the kind of plate discipline their lineup could benefit from. The Tigers also have payroll flexibility and could absorb Ozuna’s deal more easily than most. If they’re serious about October, this is the kind of move that could stabilize the lineup for the stretch run.

The next few weeks will determine the Atlanta Braves’ path, and Ozuna’s fate will likely hang in the balance. If they keep winning, Anthopoulos might still look to buy.

But if the standings don’t improve, Ozuna becomes one of the most logical and valuable trade pieces on the market—and the phones in Cleveland, Texas, and Detroit may be the first to ring.
