New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr. managed to attract almost as much attention for his wardrobe as the tennis did when he turned up at the US Open.
Chisholm was among a sizable group of Yankees players who used the team’s off day to head to Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Coco Gauff faced Iva Jovic in the Round of 16. Gauff made relatively quick work of the matchup, winning 6-1, 6-4 as she continued her attempt to reclaim the Grand Slam title she won in 2023.
Aaron Judge attended with his wife and was pictured watching from a suite. George Lombard Jr., Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, Jose Caballero, Clarke Schmidt and Spencer Jones were also among the Yankees contingent.
Chisholm’s T-Shirt Quickly Gets Yankees Fans Talking
But Chisholm immediately became a talking point online.
The infielder arrived wearing a gray T-shirt carrying the unmistakable message: “I am a virgin.”
He paired the shirt with baggy black cargo shorts, a Yankees cap, and a blue-and-white striped sweater draped over his shoulders. It did not take long for fans on social media to start dissecting the outfit.
“That shirt is … something,” one fan wrote.
Another was considerably less diplomatic, declaring: “That fit is truly horrendous.”
Even the Yankees hat became part of the conversation. Some fans joked that wearing his own team’s merchandise away from the ballpark was the baseball equivalent of a musician walking around in a T-shirt advertising their own band.
For Chisholm, however, the online reaction comes during a season when far more important questions surround his future in New York.
Contract Questions Loom Over Chisholm’s Future
Some Yankees fans responding to his US Open appearance said they “can’t wait until he’s off this team,” with Chisholm approaching free agency.
He agreed to a deal in January 2025 that kept him under team control through the end of the 2026 season. His current contract is worth $10.2 million for 2026.
The season hasn’t unfolded quite as Chisholm publicly envisioned. Before the campaign, he said he wanted to pursue a historic 50/50 season: 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. Instead, he currently has 19 homers and 40 stolen bases.
Chisholm has also made it clear that he would prefer to remain in pinstripes.
“I want to stay a Yankee, by any means kind of,” he recently told reporters while revealing that there had been no contract negotiations since spring.
When asked whether the pressure of approaching free agency had affected his performance, Chisholm pointed elsewhere.
“I wouldn’t say so,” he said. “The free agency, I feel like what I did last year and then this year, not even coming close … I think that’s what really got to me more than free agency.”
Yankees Turn Their Attention Back to Baseball
The Yankees now turn their attention back to baseball after their night at the US Open.
They open a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, with Judge expected to return to the lineup for the first time since May 31.
His return gives New York an immediate lift as the club gets back to work.
“He’s our captain, best player in baseball,” pitcher Max Fried said. “To have him back in the lineup is obviously a huge boost. We’re definitely a better team when he’s in the lineup.”
For one night, though, Chisholm didn’t need a home run or stolen base to get people talking. A gray T-shirt with four words across the front handled that job all by itself.
