The Atlanta Braves entered Sunday looking for a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, but the weekend ended on a disappointing note with a 6-4 loss in Ohio. Before the first pitch, however, much of the conversation centered on the Braves’ lineup and the return of shortstop Ha-Seong Kim.

Atlanta announced its starting nine for the series finale, featuring Ronald Acuna Jr. in right field, Michael Harris II in center, Matt Olson at first base, Ozzie Albies at second, Mauricio Dubon in left field, Austin Riley at third, Jorge Mateo as the designated hitter, Kim at shortstop, and Chadwick Tromp behind the plate.

Kim returned to action for the first time since May 27, batting eighth and taking his usual spot at shortstop. The veteran infielder has struggled offensively in limited action this season, entering Sunday’s game with a .095 batting average, four hits, two RBIs, four runs scored, and one stolen base across 12 games.

The 30-year-old is in his second season with Atlanta, and his lack of production has become a frequent topic among fans whenever the lineup is released. Despite the difficult start, the Braves continue to look for opportunities to get him back on track.

Fans Split Over The Decision

As expected, social media quickly filled with reactions after Kim’s name appeared in the lineup.

Some fans openly questioned the decision, arguing that his offensive struggles should limit his playing time. Others focused on the broader lineup, noting that Jorge Mateo was also receiving an opportunity against a left-handed pitcher.

Not everyone was critical. Several supporters expressed hope that Kim and Austin Riley would have productive afternoons, while others pointed out that players often need time to settle into a season after limited appearances. A number of fans also defended manager Walt Weiss and the coaching staff, suggesting that a team with Atlanta’s record has earned a certain level of trust.

One supporter summed up that perspective by noting that the Braves entered the day at 40-19 and appeared to be doing plenty of things right.

Braves Continue To Lead Baseball

Even with Sunday’s loss, Atlanta remains in an enviable position. The Braves sit atop the National League East and continue to own the best record in Major League Baseball at 40-19.

Their success has been particularly impressive away from home. Through 32 road games, Atlanta has posted a remarkable 23-9 record, consistently finding ways to win in hostile environments.

While Kim’s return generated debate and the Braves were unable to complete the sweep against Cincinnati, the bigger picture remains unchanged. Atlanta continues to set the pace in the division and across the league, with one of baseball’s deepest rosters and one of its strongest starts to the season. As the schedule moves forward, the club will hope players like Kim can turn early struggles into meaningful contributions in the months ahead.
